The&nbsp;<em>Telegraph&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2025\/05\/09\/one-britains-biggest-chemicals-plants-faces-closure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has the story<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Olefins 6 \u2018cracker\u2019 facility in Teesside, controlled by Sabic, employs hundreds of workers and had been undergoing a major conversion to run on gas feedstock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Sabic paused that work months ago and is now understood to be on the verge of announcing the plant\u2019s closure amid spiralling costs and concerns about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/09\/26\/britain-burdened-most-expensive-electricity-prices-in-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high energy prices<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company, which is owned by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/02\/21\/saudi-aramco-accused-misleading-sustainable-fuel-adverts-ft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saudi state oil giant Aramco<\/a>, has not responded to a request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, bosses recently said they were looking to scale back their European presence or exit the region entirely. Another cracker in the Netherlands was shuttered last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The closure of one of the UK\u2019s most significant chemical plants would deal a fresh blow to the Government as it prepares to unveil&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/02\/21\/saudi-aramco-accused-misleading-sustainable-fuel-adverts-ft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">its industrial strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, chemical company bosses warned Jonathan Reynolds, the Business Secretary, to expect mounting closures as the industry reached \u201cbreaking point\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sir Jim Ratcliffe, one of Britain\u2019s richest men, has also warned the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2025\/01\/13\/british-industry-face-extinction-net-zero-sir-jim-ratcliffe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK\u2019s multibillion-pound chemicals industry faces \u201cextinction\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;because of soaring energy costs and the shift to Net Zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sources close to Sabic suggested the plant\u2019s closure was partly due to Britain\u2019s high energy prices as well as the perceived lack of interest shown by the Government in the crisis-hit
