Six days ago, the media celebrated<\/a> a significant milestone: Spain\u2019s national grid operated entirely on renewable energy for the first time during a weekday. At 12:35 pm today local time, the lights went out across Spain and Portugal, and parts of France. Although power was quickly restored in France, it could take a week<\/a> to fully restore power in Spain and Portugal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an instant, the electric hum of modern life \u2014 trains, hospitals, airports, phones, traffic lights, cash registers \u2014 fell silent. Tens of millions of people instantly plunged into chaos, confusion, and darkness. People got stuck in elevators. Subways stopped between stations. Gas stations couldn\u2019t pump fuel. Grocery stores couldn\u2019t process payments. Air traffic controllers scrambled as systems failed and planes were diverted. In hospitals, backup generators sputtered on, but in many cases could not meet full demand. Cell towers collapsed under surges and outages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was one of the largest peacetime blackouts Europe has ever seen. And it was not random. It was not an unforeseeable event. It was the exact failure that many of us<\/a> have been, repeatedly<\/a>, warning lawmakers about for years \u2014 warnings that Europe\u2019s political leaders systematically chose to ignore.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Officials blame the atmosphere for the blackout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAccording to Portugal\u2019s electricity grid operator REN, the incident was triggered by \u201canomalous oscillations\u201d in very high-voltage lines, caused by extreme temperature variations in Spain. This rare event, known as\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spain and Portugal, both of which generate a majority of their electricity with renewables, were simultaneously hit by widespread power outages on Monday, with no explanation immediately forthcoming about the cause. Some reports said the outages also hit some parts of France.<\/p>\n\n\n

Cellular service and Internet were reported down throughout both countries, and airports lost power as well, according to sky news:<\/p>\n\n\n

Large parts of Spain and Portugal \u2013 including Madrid and Lisbon \u2013 have been hit by a power outage.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spanish power grid operator Red Electrica says it is working with energy companies to restore power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Spanish government has convened a crisis meeting at the offices of Red Electrica due to the outage, according to the El Pais newspaper in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It comes as France briefly lost power following the outages in Spain and Portugal, French grid operator RTE said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parts of Madrid underground have been evacuated and traffic lights in the city are not working, according to local media.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Play has been suspended at the Madrid Open tennis tournament due to the outage \u2013 with Britain\u2019s Jacob Fearnley forced off court in a critical moment during his third-round tie with Grigor Dimitrov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The loss of power affected scoreboards and the camera above the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maddie Sephton, who is from west London, was on the Madrid Metro when the power outage occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe got on the train and everything was fine,\u201d she told Sky News. \u201cBut then everything went dark.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was stuck on the train for 20 minutes until a staff member opened the doors manually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs Sephton says she was on her way to the airport at the time \u2013 and had to exit the station by hiking up 15 flights of stairs with her luggage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo lifts are operating \u2013 making it difficult for elderly people with limited mobility,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above ground, she said that \u201ceveryone is just standing around and waiting\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bars are unable to take card payments, cash machines are down, and traffic lights aren\u2019t working either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI currently don\u2019t have any internet service and just \u20ac15 in my wallet \u2013 I can\u2019t withdraw any money from the ATM,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA couple have offered to let us get a ride in their taxi to the airport. Their flight is at 4.30pm so they\u2019re pretty relaxed \u2013 but my flight back to London is at 3pm and I\u2019m nervous.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n
