The world\u2019s first hydrogen double decker buses have been stuck in the depot for<\/em> nearly a YEAR after <\/em><\/a>fuel ran out. Officials in Aberdeen launched the 25 eco-friendly buses, worth about \u00a3500,000 each, in a blaze of publicity and promoted them as the future.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both of the city\u2019s hydrogen stations are currently offline, leaving the multi-million pound investment unable to operate. Councillor Deena Tissera, Labour\u2019s lead on net zero and transport in Aberdeen, has raised concerns about the situation.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said: <\/em><\/a>“A lot of public money has been invested in this hydrogen strategy, especially on the buses and the refilling stations. We need to know what the story behind this is. Why are the buses not running?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The buses were launched in 2021 but faced a “mechanical problem” just a year after hitting the road. Speaking to the Press and Journal, Council co-leader Christian Allard defended the city\u2019s hydrogen ambitions despite the setback.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: “I\u2019m very proud that Aberdeen has always been pioneering in the world in using hydrogen for public transport. But when you are pioneering, there is a risk your success will bring some hurdles.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quite why Aberdeen need a \u201clead on net zero\u201d is a mystery. I\u2019m sure Aberdonians have much more urgent needs!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it hardly takes a genius to work out that hydrogen does not come out of thin air. Why on earth did not these morons consider where the city might get it from and how it could be stored before they wasted ratepayers\u2019 money on these buses?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately there will be no end to this frivolous abuse of tax money until the idiots who spend it are hauled up in court and charged with criminal misuse of public funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe Christian Allard might like to tell us how the hydrogen for his buses could be made without the use of fossil fuels, given that steam reforming is the only substantial source of hydrogen in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
