Though it has become a primary target of many climate activists, coal has been historically regarded as readily available and affordable, and several energy policy experts who spoke with Daily Caller News Foundation believe Trump has the cards necessary to strengthen the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen utility bills are skyrocketing or blackouts are happening in winter, people are going to want reliable power back,\u201d Amy Cooke, co-founder and president of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aoenergy.org\/team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Always on Energy Research<\/a>&nbsp;and the director of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.i2i.org\/?p=1595\">Energy and Environmental Policy Center<\/a>&nbsp;told the DCNF. \u201cThe beauty of coal is that it allows for affordable, reliable power, which is absolutely crucial to economic prosperity, and in particular, innovation.\u201d&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/04\/12\/electricity-prices-risen-biden-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(RELATED: Electricity Prices Have Risen Seven Times Faster Under Biden Than Trump)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think the number one, most significant threat to humanity is no power,\u201d Cooke said, adding that coal is a vital contributor to the nation\u2019s \u201cbaseload power.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following his executive order, Trump in early April granted a two-year exemption for nearly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2025-04\/regulatory-relief-for-certain-stationary-annex-1.pdf\">70 coal plants<\/a>&nbsp;from a Biden-era rule on air pollution that required them to reduce certain air pollutants. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said that the move would \u201cbolster coal-fired electricity generation, ensuring that our nation\u2019s grid is reliable, that electricity is affordable for the American people, and that EPA is helping to promote our nation\u2019s energy security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly after,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/restarting-coal-plants-after-trumps-executive-orders-makes-no-economic-sense-2025-04-10\/\">skepticism<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/14\/business\/energy-environment\/trump-coal-power-plants.html\">swirled<\/a>&nbsp;surrounding whether or not the coal industry would be able to experience a revival, and whether it would be economically savvy to pursue one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Energy generated from burning coal only powers roughly 16% of the U.S., though 40 states are dependent on coal, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/americaspower.org\/coal-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data<\/a>&nbsp;from America\u2019s Power. Energy generation through coal reached a record low in 2023, a Rhodium Group&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rhg.com\/research\/us-greenhouse-gas-emissions-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>&nbsp;reported. In 2021, however, coal was the primary source of energy for 15 states,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=54919\">according<\/a>&nbsp;to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe can lead the world in innovation,\u201d Cook told the DCNF, referencing developments in natural gas and nuclear power as beneficial. \u201cBut you have to have coal. It has to be part of the mix.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s insane that we would shut down any base load power right now, when the demand for power is so high,\u201d Cooke added. She further referenced the North American Electric Reliability Corporation\u2019s 2024&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerc.com\/pa\/RAPA\/ra\/Reliability%20Assessments%20DL\/NERC_Long%20Term%20Reliability%20Assessment_2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/energybadboys.substack.com\/p\/this-rto-could-see-blackouts-by-2028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a>&nbsp;from Always on Energy Research that have projected&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/09\/12\/policy-that-cant-win-los-angeles-endures-power-outages-after-biden-harris-admin-lauded-its-green-future\/\">rolling blackouts<\/a>&nbsp;to begin across the U.S. by 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As American energy demand continues to climb, the odds of impending blackouts would&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/10\/10\/americas-power-supply-inadequate-demand-decades-end-major-consultancy-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increase<\/a>&nbsp;if the supply fails to grow at the same rate. The push toward renewable energy sources, in addition to stringent environmental regulations&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/09\/17\/epa-power-plant-rules-grid-operators-reliability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved<\/a>&nbsp;under former President Joe Biden, may have contributed to the slower growth of energy supply currently being experienced in the U.S.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/04\/01\/blackrock-ceo-larry-fink-renewable-energy-pragmatism-wind-solar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(RELATED: A Major Backer Of Green Energy Admits Again That Solar And Wind Power Alone \u2018Can\u2019t Reliably Keep The Lights On\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediately after returning to the White House, Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/declaring-a-national-energy-emergency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declared<\/a>&nbsp;a national energy emergency, stating that \u201cthe integrity and expansion of our Nation\u2019s energy infrastructure\u201d is \u201can immediate and pressing priority for the protection of the United States\u2019 national and economic security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe looked at it and predict that there will be periods of blackouts of 24 hours or more,\u201d Cook told the DCNF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She further noted that \u201cthe cheapest power is the power you\u2019ve already paid for,\u201d arguing for the continuation of existing coal plants and the reopening of ones that have been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/07\/29\/biden-epa-regulations-shut-down-coal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">closed<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe only people who think coal is bad are those who view it through the lens of carbon emissions only, and that is no way to do energy policy,\u201d Cooke said, arguing that it is necessary to adopt a \u201cholistic\u201d approach to energy generation, given the nation\u2019s projected energy crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seen on television in WV after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@POTUS<\/a>&nbsp;signed an Executive Order revitalizing the coal industry: \u201cMiners can wake up today for the first time in a decade and their spouses and families will realize they have a job tomorrow\u2026 and hear a president of the country announce that the\u2026&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DNdcYiVvF6\">pic.twitter.com\/DNdcYiVvF6<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RapidResponse47\/status\/1911771337137311955?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 14, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe American people need more energy, and the Department of Energy is helping to meet this demand by unleashing supply of affordable, reliable, secure energy sources \u2013 including coal,\u201d Department of Energy Secretary Chris Wright said in an April 9&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/energy-department-acts-unleash-american-coal-strengthening-coal-technology-and-securing\">statement<\/a>. \u201cCoal is essential for generating 24\/7 electricity,\u201d he added, \u201cbut misguided policies from previous administrations have stifled this critical American industry. He pointed to the Trump administration loosening restrictions on coal, adding that the Biden administration made it \u201cnear impossible\u201d to build new coal plants due to aggressive&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/04\/25\/biden-climate-coal-power-00154229\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">climate rules<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under Biden\u2019s signature climate bill, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/5376\/text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inflation Reduction Act<\/a>, the U.S. prioritized renewable energy generation and subsidization, resulting in a hefty&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/08\/17\/inflation-reduction-act-two-years-biden-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">price tag<\/a>&nbsp;for taxpayers who had to foot the bill for several environmental initiatives, including hundreds of millions of dollars for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/04\/22\/biden-admin-solar-grants-ira\/\">solar panel<\/a>&nbsp;construction in some of the nation\u2019s least-sunny locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe cheapest, the most affordable thing to do is to keep our current infrastructure online,\u201d Andr\u00e9 B\u00e9liveau, Senior Manager of Energy Policy at the Commonwealth Foundation,&nbsp;told the DCNF.&nbsp;\u201cCoal remains one of, if not, the most affordable energy source we have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re forcing retirement of full-time energy sources and trying to replace them with part-time energy sources, and that\u2019s not going to work,\u201d B\u00e9liveau continued, referencing renewable energy avenues such as wind and solar. \u201cWe can\u2019t run a full-time economy on part-time energy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Energy did not respond to the DCNF\u2019s request for comment.
