I often get asked this question on social media, so I decided to provide the answer as a simple primer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. The Basics: Climate Does Change<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, let\u2019s be clear \u2014 climate change is real<\/strong> in the literal sense. The Earth\u2019s climate has been changing for billions of years<\/strong>. We have geological records showing periods that were much warmer (like the Eocene, with crocodiles in the Arctic), and much colder (like the Ice Ages that covered North America in glaciers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even more recently, we have the Holocene Climate Optimum, significantly warmer than present day:<\/p>\n\n\n

So, yes \u2014 the climate changes<\/strong>, and it always has. The debate<\/strong> isn\u2019t about whether it changes, but why<\/strong>, how fast<\/strong>, and how much humans are influencing it today.<\/strong> The debate is also about how accurately we are able to detect temperature change, plus the overreliance on climate models to predict the future rather than actual data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. What the \u201cConsensus\u201d Says \u2014 and Where It Falls Short<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mainstream position (IPCC, NOAA, NASA, etc.) holds that recent warming \u2014 roughly 1.1\u00b0C since the late 1800s<\/strong> \u2014 is largely due to increased CO\u2082 from human activity<\/strong>, mainly fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here\u2019s the rub: this view is heavily dependent on climate models<\/a><\/strong>, which are notoriously uncertain<\/a><\/strong>. As someone with a meteorology background, I can tell you models struggle with cloud feedbacks<\/a><\/strong>, ocean cycles<\/a><\/strong>, solar variability<\/a><\/strong>, and regional forecasts \u2014 all of which are crucial to understanding climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When models are run backward<\/strong>, they often fail to replicate<\/strong> past climate variability accurately<\/a> \u2014 like the Medieval Warm Period or the Little Ice Age \u2014 unless they\u2019re tuned heavily. That calls into question their reliability for long-term projections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Natural Variability: The Elephant in the Room<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lot of warming in the 20th century happened before CO\u2082 rose sharply<\/strong> post-WWII. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n
