renewable energy, is apparently ready to argue that climate change would benefit humans<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/author\/thor-benson\/\">THOR BENSON<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/author\/thor-benson\/\"><\/a><br>MARCH 31, 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Windmills cause cancer. They\u2019re killing birds and whales. Electric vehicles don\u2019t work. Have you heard about the electric sharks?&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/climate-change\/\">Climate change<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eenews.net\/articles\/trumps-climate-threats-rattle-worlds-biggest-science-meeting\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is a hoax<\/a>. There are many things&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>&nbsp;has said about climate change and renewable energy that are difficult to make sense of, but Trump\u2019s newest line on climate change is both dumbfounding and truly dangerous: He is now determined to convince the world that climate change is a good thing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump has certainly downplayed the effects of climate change in the past. He\u2019s claimed rising sea levels will create more beachfront property, which would seem to be a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/08\/13\/does-donald-trump-understand-how-ocean-works\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">misunderstanding<\/a>&nbsp;of how land works. He\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wgntv.com\/news\/trump-tweets-the-country-could-use-good-old-global-warming-amid-deep-freeze\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">talked<\/a>about how people would actually be happy if it was a little warmer outside. Even Trump adviser Elon Musk, who runs an EV company, has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/09\/us\/elon-musk-wildfires-la-california.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">downplayed<\/a>the threat of climate change in recent months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, Trump is aiming to use the power of the federal government to reframe climate change as something that will benefit humanity.&nbsp;<br><br>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s so outrageous that no one except [Trump] would try to do this,\u201d says Edward Maibach, director of George Mason University\u2019s Center for Climate Change Communication. \u201cIn America, anyone is free to call devastating storms, floods, droughts, air pollution, killer heatwaves, and a growing threat of mosquito- and tick-borne diseases a good thing. But saying it doesn\u2019t make it true.\u201d<br><br>\u2026Read more:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/trump-convince-world-climate-change-good-1235306675\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/trump-convince-world-climate-change-good-1235306675\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is what the IPCC has to say about extreme weather \u2013 from Chapter 11 of AR6, the latest official IPCC report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Extreme Storms, Including Tropical Cyclones<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The average and maximum rain rates associated with tropical cyclones (TCs), extratropical cyclones and atmospheric rivers across the globe, and severe convective storms in some regions,&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>increase in a warming world&nbsp;<\/strong>(<em>high confidence<\/em><strong>)&nbsp;<\/strong><em>.&nbsp;<\/em><strong>Available event attribution studies of observed strong TCs provide&nbsp;<em>medium confidence<\/em>&nbsp;for a human contribution to extreme TC rainfall<\/strong>. Peak TC rain rates increase with local warming at least at the rate of mean water vapour increase over oceans (about 7% per 1\u00b0C of warming) and in some cases exceeding this rate due to increased low-level moisture convergence caused by increases in TC wind intensity (<em>medium confidence<\/em>).&nbsp;&nbsp;{11.7, 11.4, Box 11.1}<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It is<\/strong>&nbsp;<em>likely&nbsp;<\/em><strong>that the global proportion of Category 3\u20135 tropical cyclone instances<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg1\/chapter\/chapter-11\/ch11.html#footnote-010\">2<\/a><strong>has increased over the past four decades.&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>The average location where TCs reach their peak wind intensity has&nbsp;<em>very likely&nbsp;<\/em>migrated poleward in the western North Pacific Ocean since the 1940s<\/strong>, and TC translation speed has&nbsp;<em>likely&nbsp;<\/em>slowed over the conterminous USA since 1900.&nbsp;<strong>Evidence of similar trends in other regions is not robust.<\/strong>&nbsp;The global frequency of TC rapid intensification events has&nbsp;<em>likely&nbsp;<\/em>increased over the past four decades. None of these changes can be explained by natural variability alone (<em>medium<\/em><em>&nbsp;confidence<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The proportion of intense TCs, average peak TC wind speeds, and peak wind speeds of the most intense TCs will increase on the global scale with increasing global warming&nbsp;<\/strong>(<em>high confidence<\/em><strong>).&nbsp;<\/strong>The total global frequency of TC formation will decrease or remain unchanged with increasing global warming (<em>medium confide<\/em><em>nce<\/em>).&nbsp;{11.7.1}<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There is\u00a0<em>low confidence<\/em>\u00a0in past changes of maximum wind speeds and other measures of dynamical intensity of extratropical cyclones.\u00a0Future wind speed changes are expected to be small, although poleward shifts in the storm tracks could lead to substantial changes in extreme wind speeds in some regions\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>medium confidence<\/em><strong>).\u00a0<\/strong>There is\u00a0<em>low confidence<\/em>\u00a0in past trends in characteristics of severe convective storms, such as hail and severe winds, beyond an increase in precipitation rates. I appreciate the improvement in the table from WG 1, particularly the inclusion of symmetrical confidence levels\u2013but&nbsp;<strong>please get rid of the ridiculous \u201cinconclusive\u201d for the .34 to .66 subjective probability range<\/strong>. It will convey a completely differnt meaning to lay persons\u2013read decisionmakers\u2013since&nbsp;<strong>that probability range represents medium levels of confidence<\/strong>, not rare events. A phrase like \u201cquite possible\u201d is closer to popular lexicon, but inconclusive applies as well to very likely or very unlikely events and is undoubtedly going to be misinterpreted on the outside. I also appreciate the addition of increasing huricane intensities with warming moving out of the catch all less than .66 category it was in the SOD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the aid of this Climategate gobbledygook translation, we know that \u201cmedium confidence\u201d in IPCC speak means \u201cinconclusive\u201d. Given the number of \u201cmedium confidence\u201d claims in the IPCC quote above, I think we can reasonably conclude claims climate change is causing extreme weather are not supported by the evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for claims climate change will increase mosquito borne disease, this is such an absurdity I\u2019m surprised scientists still have the effrontery to keep making this claim. Anyone who has ever visited the far North will have observed first hand that mosquitoes don\u2019t need a tropical climate to thrive. The journalist made no attempt to research the history of diseases like Malaria, how&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/malariajournal.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/1475-2875-4-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mosquito borne diseases used to be the scourge Britain, and even far Northern countries like Sweden<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 definitely NOT a disease which needs a tropical climate to thrive.
