The Telegraph have a sob story about heat pumps:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeter and Anne Watts made headlines when they became one of around four British households to have an <\/em>air-source heat pump<\/em><\/a> fitted in 2008.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That Mr and Mrs Watts, 88 and 82 respectively, had installed a heat pump a decade before the likes of Boris Johnson seized upon them as the future of home heating was highly unusual.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe had a reporter up from the local paper asking us about our solar panels and our heat pump,\u201d recalls Mr Watts.\u201cIn the days afterwards, we got a call from the BBC \u2013 I thought it was a prank call from the neighbours.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet 17 years on, the pump is nearing the end of its lifespan \u2013 and the price tag for a replacement is \u00a317,000, around \u00a310,000 more than they paid for their original.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gist of the story is that the government\u2019s \u00a37500 subsidy for heat pumps does not cover ones which replace existing heat pumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea that it should is frankly ludicrous \u2013 when we are all forced to have one, we\u2019ll all end up permanently subsidising our own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this story is a timely reminder that heat pumps don\u2019t last forever. Every 15 years or so, you\u2019ll have to fork out another \u00a317000 for a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if, like this couple, you are retired, just where are you expected to get the money from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
