Maura Healey and Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rebecca Tepper. The letter included calls for provisions to lower energy bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Massachusetts has historically supported several expensive green energy projects that have been found to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/02\/05\/david-blackmon-trumps-national-energy-council-should-end-bidens-offshore-wind-boondoggle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">raise utility costs<\/a>, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/blog\/unpacking-high-cost-offshore-wind-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">offshore wind farms<\/a>&nbsp;like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/03\/03\/offshore-wind-turbine-polluted-atlantic-damaged-by-lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vineyard Wind<\/a>&nbsp;and the abandoned&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2014\/07\/01\/feds-give-cape-wind-project-150-million-loan-guarantee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cape Wind<\/a>&nbsp;project. The Bay State&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/info-details\/massachusetts-clean-energy-and-climate-plan-for-2050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plans<\/a>&nbsp;to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, a goal also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycallernewsfoundation.org\/2024\/07\/27\/janet-yellen-calls-for-78000000000000-to-tackle-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">championed<\/a>&nbsp;by the Biden administration to the tune of $3 trillion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe sharp spikes in heating bills throughout the Commonwealth in January and&nbsp;February have been a financial shock and burden to customers,\u201d the letter opens. \u201cThis spike has&nbsp;caused real pain and has been seized upon by climate deniers and opponents of&nbsp;clean energy.\u201d&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/02\/03\/one-of-americas-offline-subsidies-incinerating-birds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(RELATED: One Of America\u2019s Priciest Green Boondoggles May Be Going Offline After Sucking Up Subsidies And Incinerating Birds)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-scribd wp-block-embed-scribd wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Letter on Gas Price Spikes to Maura Healey\" class=\"scribd_iframe_embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/embeds\/840736159\/content\" data-aspect-ratio=\"0.7729220222793488\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"840736159\" width=\"723\" height=\"1000\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><script type=\"text\/javascript\">          (function() { var scribd = document.createElement(\"script\"); scribd.type = \"text\/javascript\"; scribd.async = true; scribd.src = \"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/javascripts\/embed_code\/inject.js\"; var s = document.getElementsByTagName(\"script\")[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(scribd, s); })()        <\/script>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/840736159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">View this document on Scribd<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/840736159\/Letter-on-Gas-Price-Spikes-to-Maura-Healey#from_embed\">Letter on Gas Price Spikes to Maura Healey&nbsp;<\/a>by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/user\/628936560\/Boston-25-Desk#from_embed\">Boston 25 Desk<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn 2023 alone, Massachusetts gas customers were charged $160 million to hook up additional buildings to the gas system, an average cost of nearly $10,000 per new customer for infrastructure that only serves those customers,\u201d the letter continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter demands quicker action on lowering utility bills, outlining the first step as reducing infrastructure spending unless it is \u201cfinancially appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The document also claims that local \u201cgas companies are charging ratepayers for their lobbying, advertising, and other expenses,\u201d through a \u201cloophole.\u201d It also states that under the \u201creform the obligation to serve\u201d request that \u201cthe 2024 climate law indicated that gas utilities can no longer be compelled to serve customers where alternatives to distributed gas are available.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter included steps to lower energy bills, which prompted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/saeverley\/status\/1902386958657024248\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">critics<\/a>&nbsp;to point to Sierra Club\u2019s expensive energy policy goals. Sierra Club&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/massachusetts\/climate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advocates<\/a>&nbsp;for 100% clean energy by 2050, according to its website. The Institute for Energy Research writes that it would cost&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforenergyresearch.org\/renewable\/cost-of-transitioning-to-100-percent-renewable-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trillions<\/a>&nbsp;of dollars to enact this goal, citing studies from both Wood Mackenzie and American Action Forum, which estimate that this policy, shared with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gp.org\/gnd_full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Green New Deal<\/a>, is unrealistic and expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not fast enough to help with energy burden,\u201d Vick Mohanka, the chapter director for Sierra Club\u2019s Massachusetts chapter,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston25news.com\/news\/local\/mass-environmental-group-seek-swifter-action-high-energy-bills\/GT7F35JKOZDZ7EMIZRAXWBXRAA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;Boston 25 News.&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s 100% on our bills and we\u2019re paying more profits on this than other states,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chapter dubs its state as \u201ca leader\u201d when it comes to \u201ctackling climate change.\u201d The group\u2019s website reads that \u201cMassachusetts has been rated #1 among all states for energy efficiency four years in a row,\u201d and that the state was \u201cone of the first states to pass aggressive climate change goals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sierra Club Massachusetts&nbsp;did not respond to the DCNF\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow indicate that renewable energy is a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/commodity\/natural-gas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safe and sustainable<\/a>\u201d supply of energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;A spokesperson for Healey\u2019s office told Boston 25 News that \u201cenergy costs are too high in Massachusetts and Governor Healey is focused on bringing them down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGovernor Healey has already taken action to lower people\u2019s bills by $220 million in March and April, and her plan would save nearly $6 billion for electric and gas customers over the next five years,\u201d they continued. \u201cShe also agrees that more needs to be done.
