Ed Miliband is expected to block a bid to ban the government from buying solar panels feared to have been made with slave <\/em>labour<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government is poised to vote against a Lords amendment to the Great British Energy Bill when it returns to the Commons on Tuesday.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The change would prevent taxpayer money being used to buy products from a company where there was \u2018credible evidence\u2019 of modern slavery in its <\/em>supply chain<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move comes amid mounting disquiet over the involvement of <\/em>China<\/em><\/a> in the Net Zero drive, such as the supply of wind turbines and solar panels.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside security issues, there have been long-standing concerns over <\/em>Beijing<\/em><\/a>\u2018s use of forced Uighur labour.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month peers backed the cross-party amendment by 177 votes to 127, majority 50, despite the government arguing that there were already enough safeguards.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

ut when asked where the solar panels will come from he conceded that some will come from China, which is responsible for an estimated 80 per cent of total global supply.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quizzed as to why British ones were not being used, Mr Miliband told LBC radio: \u2018Our solar panel industry has not got this kind of share of the market.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked if they will come from China or <\/em>Russia<\/em><\/a>, he said: \u2018Some of them will be, they\u2019ll be from different countries, but that\u2019s why we\u2019ve got to build our domestic industry.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights campaigner Lord Alton of Liverpool, the independent cross-bencher who championed the amendment, said last month: \u2018British labour will never be able to compete with slave labour or with industries that are heavily dependent on cheaper and dirtier energy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u2018This amendment puts it to Parliament \u2018Do we want a slavery free green transition or are we content to allow the Government\u2019s objectives to be achieved through forced labour in a state accused by the House of Commons of genocide?\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018It should be inconceivable that the UK which did so much to end the scourge of slavery around the world would today accept or be willing to turn a blind eye on products made by a state with an imposed system of forced labour.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
