The US government\u2019s weather agency has been dismantled by the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) after it was accused of peddling \u201cmisinformation\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hundreds of weather forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) were fired last week as part of Donald Trump\u2019s plans to <\/em>slash the federal workforce<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In total, at least 800 civil servants are thought to have lost their jobs, including meteorologists, radar specialists and crews of hurricane hunters, who fly aircraft into storms to help forecasters, according to CBS.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The job cuts have triggered protests at the agency\u2019s headquarters in Maryland, with some scientists and lawmakers warning that removing staff involved in predicting natural disasters will \u201cendanger American lives going forward\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof Roger Pielke, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute who focuses on the politicisation of science, said that the agency is \u201creaping the whirlwind\u201d for \u201ccutting corners on science\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy not upholding the highest standards of scientific integrity, we\u2019ve opened the door to politicians meddling,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Telegraph, however, don\u2019t mention the fact that there are 12,000 staff at NOAA, so a cut of 800 is hardly \u201ctorn apart\u201d. Moreover, as\u00a0I wrote<\/a>\u00a0last week, the 800 are all probationary workers, so are hardly vital to operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As with our Met Office, there are huge swathes of the NOAA operation who are surplus to the basic functioning of the organisation \u2013 not least those whose job is to push the climate agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
