BP\u2019s announcement that it had dropped plans for a “green” hydrogen plant has been described as “bitterly disappointing”.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The multinational had previously sought <\/em>planning permission<\/em><\/a> to build a power plant in Redcar, which would have produced hydrogen by breaking down water using electricity.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as part of a shift in <\/em>strategy away from renewables<\/em><\/a>, the firm has now scrapped the scheme.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leader of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Alec Brown, said that despite the “blow”, BP remained committed to “innovative projects” in the region.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

BP had <\/em>previously said<\/em><\/a> the construction of HyGreen would create up to 500 jobs with the likelihood the “majority” would be taken by people living in the Middlesbrough and Stockton area.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The electricity used at the plant would have mainly been derived from low carbon sources and the hydrogen would have been used by industry.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The firm said it would now be focusing on other projects in the area including <\/em>Net Zero Teesside<\/em><\/a> and a <\/em>blue hydrogen plant<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brown said: “This is bitterly disappointing news \u2013 but we remain optimistic about the future.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

BP have clearly decided there is no future investing in projects which are totally reliant on government subsidy to be viable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
