The astonishing and rapid growth of<strong>&nbsp;AI<\/strong>&nbsp;has resulted in eye-popping demands for energy, with&nbsp;<strong>data centres set to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/11\/23\/data-centers-powering-ai-could-use-more-electricity-than-entire-cities.html#:~:text=The%20power%20needs%20of%20artificial,to%20companies%20developing%20the%20facilities.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">consume more electricity<\/a>&nbsp;than entire cities.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Grids<\/strong>&nbsp;will be pushed to their limits. This spells&nbsp;<strong>danger for Canadian provinces like British Columbia<\/strong>, whose hydroelectricity regime can<strong>&nbsp;no longer reliably supply<\/strong>&nbsp;its economy and population. After Russia invaded Ukraine, EU countries had to rapidly seek new, stable suppliers of energy to replace the massive Russian gas imports that supplied much of the EU.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The war revealed how&nbsp;<strong>energy security amongst friends and allies<\/strong>&nbsp;was just as&nbsp;<strong>important<\/strong>&nbsp;as emissions reductions, if not more so. B.C. has a good head start, but the US and Japan plowing ahead with $44 billion LNG deals should be&nbsp;<strong>a wakeup call to Ottawa.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>An LNG export deal with Japan<\/strong>&nbsp;of similar value&nbsp;<strong>should be completed while American LNG still has to pass through the Panama Canal<\/strong>&nbsp;to get to Japan, not after it starts being shipped from Alaska. This was true of the<br>Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and it is true of NATO.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Mark Carney\u2019s own attempts<\/strong>&nbsp;to forge agreements such as the&nbsp;<strong>Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ)<\/strong>, which has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/opinion\/opinion-banks-quit-carneys-net-zero-alliance-zero-ideology#:~:text=Six%20of%20the%20biggest%20U.S.,management%20arm%20of%20the%20GFANZ.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abandoned<\/a>&nbsp;by major American and Canadian banks and financial institutions, have&nbsp;<strong>collapsed<\/strong>.
