class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Net Zero has been left on life support after the air industry abandoned hydrogen-powered planes, despite billions in investment, with no alternative \u2018green\u2019 technology on the cards. The&nbsp;<em>Telegraph&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2025\/02\/19\/plans-for-hydrogen-powered-jets-are-being-torn-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has more<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The push to develop hydrogen-powered planes was once a key part of the aviation industry\u2019s bid to eliminate carbon emissions. But in the last few weeks, it has fallen suddenly and dramatically out of favour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, European airlines and manufacturers drastically downgraded their target for the contribution of hydrogen to their goal of reaching Net Zero by 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Airbus, the world\u2019s biggest plane maker, put the industry\u2019s most advanced programme for developing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2023\/09\/07\/hydrogen-fuel-plane-fly-london-rome-test-flight-h2fly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a hydrogen-powered passenger aircraft<\/a>&nbsp;on hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boeing, always a comparative sceptic, has meanwhile confirmed that it sees little or no role for hydrogen in decarbonising its own jets for decades at least.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decline in hydrogen\u2019s fortunes represents a potential setback for the UK, where British companies and the Government have invested hundreds of millions of pounds in the technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also leaves the European aviation industry facing a bill of more than \u20ac1 trillion (\u00a3830bn) to decarbonise by the middle of the century, a total it will struggle to fund alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hydrogen planes \u201chave almost vanished from the road map\u201d, says Carlos L\u00f3pez de la Osa, of Transport and Environment (T&amp;E), which promotes sustainable flying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2023\/01\/19\/hydrogen-powered-19-seater-plane-flies-cotswolds-world-first\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the only realistic fuel alternative to fossil fuels<\/a>&nbsp;for full-size passenger jets appears to have been swept off the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electric airliners are regarded as a little more than a pipe dream by many experts because of the excessive weight and low energy density of batteries, while the credibility of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is in doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate campaigners question its carbon-reduction credentials and the gap between production volumes and industry requirements widens every year.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"723\" height=\"389\" data-attachment-id=\"366988\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/climatescience.press\/?attachment_id=366988\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-409.png?fit=754%2C406&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"754,406\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"image\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-409.png?fit=723%2C389&amp;ssl=1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-409.png?resize=723%2C389&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-366988\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-409.png?w=754&amp;ssl=1 754w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-409.png?resize=300%2C162&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 723px) 100vw, 723px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worth&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2025\/02\/19\/plans-for-hydrogen-powered-jets-are-being-torn-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reading in full<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michael Deacon&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2025\/02\/18\/greta-thunberg-climate-change-hypocrisy-gen-z\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notes<\/a>&nbsp;that, for all their climate anxiety and Greta Thunberg\u2019s chastening of oldies, young people are actually the worst offenders when it comes to air travel and \u2018green\u2019 behaviours:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It turns out that the young are wrecking the planet, too. In fact, they may be doing even more to wreck it than their grandparents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just look at the results of a new poll by the Civil Aviation Authority. It found that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2025\/02\/17\/jet-setting-gen-z-fly-more-boomers-net-zero-piety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">those aged 18-34 fly a lot more frequently than those aged 55 and over<\/a>. In the past year, almost three quarters of the former group travelled by plane, compared with only half of the latter group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may seem unexpected, given that members of Greta\u2019s generation are always telling pollsters \u2013 and everyone else who will listen \u2013 how terrified they are about climate change. But then, perhaps we shouldn\u2019t be so surprised. In 2023, a poll by YouGov found that young adults did less recycling than Baby Boomers. They were also less likely to save water, wash their clothes at low temperatures, and switch off electric lights when leaving a room.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p
