The West\u2019s focus on Net Zero has been a \u201ccolossal failure\u201d and \u201clunacy\u201d that has lowered living standards, President Trump\u2019s Energy Secretary Chris Wright has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with Chris Uhlmann at the ARC (Alliance for Responsible Citizenship) conference in London, Secretary Wright defended the role of fossil fuels while praising nuclear as an \u201cenergy-dense, reliable technology that has been stifled by regulation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wright called Net Zero 2050 a \u201csinister goal\u201d that \u201clowers the standard of living of the population\u201d by \u201cimpoverishing\u2026 citizens in pursuit of a delusion\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said his priority instead is to \u201cgrow the supply of affordable, secure energy\u201d, criticising countries like the UK that have pursued Net Zero and allowed the \u201cexport [of its] industry\u201d as \u201cno one is going to make an energy intensive product in the UK anymore\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Net Zero has meant trillions of dollars of investment with scarcely any return, he told delegates. Anywhere that there is significant renewables penetration, electricity prices have gone up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe world runs on hydrocarbons, and for most of their uses we don\u2019t have replacements. \u2026 We need to make the pie bigger,\u201d he argued. \u201cEnergy realism is critical for humanism. \u2026 You cannot have security without energy security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secretary Wright challenged the \u2018consensus\u2019 of climate activists, saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deaths from extreme weather have plummeted over the last 100 years. \u2026 Most of the climate-obsessed people I\u2019ve spoken to know very little about the data. \u2026 I think the agenda might be different from climate change, it has certainly been a powerful tool to grow state power and shrink personal freedom \u2014 this is sinister.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In his first international remarks since being confirmed, Wright concluded by calling for a \u201cfocus on humans and their lives\u201d and on \u201cthe need to unleash freedom, opportunity and energy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 2023, the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship is a global network of leaders committed to \u201cgenerating positive, practical solutions to the greatest challenges of our time\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In October 2023, ARC brought together over 1,500 people from 72 countries in London, including some of the world\u2019s foremost thinkers, business and cultural figures and politicians, according to a press release. Since then, the organisation has hosted conferences in Europe and Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ARC\u2019s second annual conference is being hosted in London\u2019s ExCeL Centre from February 17th-19th. The conference is one of the largest of its kind, with over 4,000 delegates attending from 96 countries \u2014 including over 1,000 from the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference international organising committee<\/a> includes Baroness Philippa Stroud, Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson, Australian Shadow Minister for Defence Andrew Hastie and former Australian Prime Ministers John Howard and Tony Abbott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
