Now NSIDC blames record low sea ice on global warming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>World\u2019s sea-ice falls to record low<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark Poynting and Erwan Rivault<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BBC Climate &amp; Verify data journalism teams<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world\u2019s frozen oceans, which help to keep the planet cool, currently have less ice than ever previously recorded, satellite data shows.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sea-ice around the north and south poles acts like a giant mirror by reflecting much of the Sun\u2019s energy back into space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But as rising temperatures cause this bright layer to shrink, the dark ocean below can absorb more heat, warming the planet further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This latest sea-ice low appears to have been driven by a combination of warm air, warm seas and winds breaking apart the ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery year, every data point that we get suggests that&nbsp;<strong>this isn\u2019t a temporary shift, but something more permanent<\/strong>, like what we\u2019ve seen in the Arctic,\u201d Walter Meier, senior research scientist at NSIDC, told BBC News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>It is indicating that the Antarctic has moved into a new regime of lower ice extents.<\/strong>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cvgeydkz08go\">https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cvgeydkz08go<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back in 2014, melting glaciers making sea water less saline was blamed for record HIGH Antarctic sea ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Antarctic winter sea ice extent sets new record in 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BY MICHON SCOTT&nbsp;&nbsp;REVIEWED&nbsp;BY&nbsp;TED SCAMBOS<br>PUBLISHED OCTOBER 7, 2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DETAILS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It\u2019s not unreasonable to wonder how, if the planet is warming, Antarctic winter sea ice can set record highs.<\/strong>&nbsp;As the NSIDC release explains, Antarctica\u2019s sea ice growth spurt may be down to stronger winds and slightly fresher sea surface water around the margins of the continent\u2019s melting ice shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Winds probably did not act alone to spur so much sea ice growth, melting land ice may have played a role.<\/strong>\u00a0Most of Antarctica\u2019s ice lies in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nsidc.org\/cryosphere\/sotc\/ice_sheets.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ice sheets<\/a>\u00a0that cover the continent, and\u00a0<strong>in recent decades, that ice has been melting.<\/strong>\u00a0Along the coastline,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nsidc.org\/cryosphere\/sotc\/iceshelves.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ice shelves<\/a>\u00a0float on the ocean surface, and much of the recent melt may be driven by warm water from the deep ocean rising and making contact with ice shelf undersides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How does the melting of land ice matter to sea ice formation? The resulting meltwater is fresher than the seawater.<\/strong>&nbsp;As it mixes with the seawater, the meltwater makes the nearby seawater slightly less dense, and slightly closer to the freezing point than the ocean water below. While a lot of bad things happened during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.antarctica.gov.au\/about-antarctica\/history\/people\/douglas-mawson\/\">Mawson expeditions, in 1911 and 1929<\/a>, and his other visits to Antarctic, Mawson managed to reach Antarctica on at least three occasions, unlike the Ship of Fools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arctic sea ice has also proven highly variable over the years, with long periods of sustained melt and freeze, many of which occurred well before anthropogenic CO2 could have become a significant factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-watts-up-with-that wp-block-embed-watts-up-with-that\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"6O4EOafi1s\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2017\/08\/17\/what-do-we-know-about-arctic-sea-ice-trends\/\">What do we know about Arctic sea ice trends?<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;What do we know about Arctic sea ice trends?&#8221; &#8212; Watts Up With That?\" src=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2017\/08\/17\/what-do-we-know-about-arctic-sea-ice-trends\/embed\/#?secret=r5IZYHvzml#?secret=6O4EOafi1s\" data-secret=\"6O4EOafi1s\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What can we conclude from all this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It seems pretty obvious that declaring a \u201cnew regime\u201d of lower sea ice extent on the strength of a decade of sea ice retreat is premature, given the history of extreme natural variability.
