AEDT<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pace of global heating has been significantly underestimated, according to renowned climate scientist Prof&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/hansen\">James Hansen<\/a>, who said the international 2C target is \u201cdead\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) defined a scenario which gives a 50% chance to keep warming under 2C \u2013 that scenario is now impossible,\u201d he said. \u201cThe 2C target is dead, because the global energy use is rising, and it will continue to rise.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new analysis said global heating is likely to reach 2C by 2045, unless solar geoengineering is deployed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the new study,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/00139157.2025.2434494\">published in the journal Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development<\/a>, Hansen\u2019s team said: \u201cFailure to be realistic in climate assessment and failure to call out the fecklessness of current policies to stem global warming is not helpful to young people.\u201d<br><br>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe basic problem is that the waste products of fossil fuels are still dumped in the air free of charge,\u201d he said. He also backed the rapid development of nuclear power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said: \u201cWe do not recommend implementing climate interventions, but we suggest that young people not be prohibited from having knowledge of the potential and limitations of purposeful global cooling in their toolbox.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Political change is needed to achieve all these measures, Hansen said: \u201cSpecial interests have assumed far too much power in our political systems.\u00a0<strong>In democratic countries the power should be with the voter, not with the people who have the money. In the recent Presidential election,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c3613e1b-c15d-47b8-a502-400c4114c09e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kamala Harris substantially outspent President Trump<\/a>, but voters still chose President Trump. Clearly money isn\u2019t everything, at least when it comes to US elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m not going to lose any sleep over James Hansen\u2019s climate doomsday predictions. In the article above, a number of Hansen\u2019s former colleagues distanced themselves from his latest outburst \u2013 with good reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">James Hansen has made a number of predictions over the years which proven to be less than accurate;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/failed-prediction-timeline\/?single_link=8fa8b4a9-77d5-4e75-8208-9e6dc7546d28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1986: Global Temperatures are predicted to increase an additional 3 or 4 degrees sometime between 2010 and 2020<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/failed-prediction-timeline\/?single_link=547ec665-c2a4-4935-97de-e4b29f924bab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1988: Global Warming Will Cause Droughts<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/failed-prediction-timeline\/?single_link=78028056-5345-4b81-96ce-2acd17ce2135\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2001: West Side Highway Will be Underwater Within 30 Years<br><\/a><\/strong><br><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/failed-prediction-timeline\/?single_link=71abc6d9-1854-403d-9aee-3de4490e9158\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2008: In five to 10 years, the Arctic will be free of see ice in the summer<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, even amongst climate alarmists, there is always someone who is determined to go one better<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-watts-up-with-that wp-block-embed-watts-up-with-that\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"YhsPSRqpMi\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2015\/12\/17\/naomi-oreskes-james-hansen-is-a-denier\/\">Naomi Oreskes: James Hansen is a Denier<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Naomi Oreskes: James Hansen is a Denier&#8221; &#8212; Watts Up With That?\" src=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2015\/12\/17\/naomi-oreskes-james-hansen-is-a-denier\/embed\/#?secret=LPH3HaWSCX#?secret=YhsPSRqpMi\" data-secret=\"YhsPSRqpMi\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interestingly even Hansen\u2019s zeal for reducing CO2 appears to have limits. WUWT once offered a joint platform with Hansen, to support research into nuclear reactors. But Hansen still has some influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I believe Hansen\u2019s attacks on democracy are potentially damaging. In periods of turmoil like the present day, there is a risk Hansen\u2019s words will influence more young people to join radical environmental movements. Hansen has appealed to young people, and may still have the power to influence young people to embrace his climate extremism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If even one young person is influenced by Hansen\u2019s alarmist rhetoric, and as a result decides to throw away their future by committing a futile act of eco-terrorism, what a waste and a tragedy that would be, and perhaps already is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-watts-up-with-that wp-block-embed-watts-up-with-that\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"igq2QakJd3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2025\/01\/31\/legal-appeal-climate-clowns-did-what-they-did-out-of-sacrifice\/\">Legal Appeal: Climate Clowns &#8220;did what they did out of sacrifice&#8221;<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Legal Appeal: Climate Clowns &#8220;did what they did out of sacrifice&#8221;&#8221; &#8212; Watts Up With That?\" src=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2025\/01\/31\/legal-appeal-climate-clowns-did-what-they-did-out-of-sacrifice\/embed\/#?secret=RJkW2OxuN8#?secret=igq2QakJd3\" data-secret=\"igq2QakJd3\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am not accusing James Hansen of deliberately inciting acts of eco-terrorism.
