How to teach climate change so 15-year-olds can act<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

OECD\u2019s Pisa program will measure the ability of students to take action in response to climate anxiety and \u2018take their position and role in the global world\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to get hot and everything\u2019s going to be on fire and the oceans will rise<\/strong>,\u201d says a year 11 student, Josh Dorian. \u201cThat\u2019s just like the worst of the worst. How do you combat that?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, you fix it, you stop it from happening, you take preventive measures,\u201d says Josh, who is studying VCE environmental science at Mount Lilydale Mercy College, a high school in Melbourne\u2019s outer east. \u201cInvolving kids in that is scary but I think it\u2019s necessary.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, for the first time in nearly a decade, science will be the major focus of the OECD\u2019s program for international student assessment<\/strong> (Pisa)<\/a> \u2013 which runs every three years (give or take Covid interruptions), its focus rotating between reading, maths and science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year it will measure the knowledge and ability of 15-year-old students from 92 countries and economies to act on climate change, under a new heading: <\/strong>Agency in the Anthropocene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s about understanding their role in the ecosystem. \u201cNot as a pinnacle up the top, but as a player in a whole range of other players in an ecosystem.<\/strong> They\u2019re part of a system, which means they have to act responsibly in the system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last two premier climate conferences have been hosted by oil sheiks and petro-tyrants who think fossil fuel is a \u201cgift from god\u201d. But even a dying snake can deliver a deadly strike. The climate movement is still doing a lot of damage on the way down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the climate movement is finally swept into the dustbin of history, this period during which our society taught millions of frightened children that it is their responsibility to save the world will rank high on the list of wicked acts committed by greens and their political enablers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
