breakthrough demonstrates the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize this process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Previously unrecorded climate extremes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A team led by \u00c9tienne Pl\u00e9siat of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dkrz.de\/en\/dkrz-partner-for-climate-research?set_language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">German Climate Computing Center<\/a>&nbsp;in Hamburg, alongside colleagues from the UK and Spain, applied AI to reconstruct European climate extremes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research not only confirmed known climate trends but also revealed previously unrecorded extreme&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/climate-change-earth-energy-imbalance-temperature-rise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">events<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using historical simulations from the CMIP6 archive (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project), the team trained CRAI to reconstruct past climate data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experts validated their results using standard metrics such as class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What are AI hallucinations?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI hallucination is a phenomenon wherein a large language model (LLM)\u2014often a generative AI\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/topics\/chatbots\">chatbot<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/topics\/computer-vision\">computer vision<\/a>\u00a0tool\u2014perceives patterns or objects that are nonexistent or imperceptible to human observers, creating outputs that are nonsensical or altogether inaccurate.Read contribute greatly to the advancement of mankind. But you have to rigorously test the output. Comparing the AI output to a flawed model to see if it fits in the band of plausibility is not what I call testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate scientists have been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2024\/11\/26\/hey-carbon-brief-quit-conflating-model-based-attribution-study-outputs-with-real-weather-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">repeatedly criticised<\/a>&nbsp;for treating their model output as data. Using a tool which is known for its tendency to produce false or misleading data, to generate climate \u201crecords\u201d which cannot be properly checked in my opinion is an exercise in scientific
