The UN expert climate scientists say that shutting coal plants and building windmills is the best way to stop floods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matt Ridley is wondering if removing 133 dams had anything to do with it, or if perhaps they should have built the big dam that was approved in 2001 but stopped by the Socialists in 2004:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/article\/dam-shame-what-really-caused-valencias-floods\/\">Dam shame: what really caused Valencia\u2019s floods?<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Matt Ridley,&nbsp;<em>The Spectator<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026 Valencia had a similarly terrible flood in 1957, in which 81 people died, long before climate change became the go-to excuse for any bad weather. After that flood, to prevent a recurrence, the Spanish government built a string of dams in the hills to hold back water and diverted the Turia river away from the city. For more than six decades the system worked well. Why did it fail this year? Because the unusually warm sea made for an unusually bad storm, say some. Yet charts of rainfall in Spain show no trend towards a higher frequency of more extreme downpours\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, 24 hour torrential rainfall records back to 1940 don\u2019t sing the Climate Change song. Under a European Union programme to encourage the restoration of rivers to their wild state for the benefit of fish migration, Spain set about dismantling barriers of all kinds. In 2021 it got rid of 108 dams and weirs; in 2022, another 133. That year, according to Dam Removal Europe, a coalition of seven green pressure groups, it was Europe\u2019s proud league champion at dismantling them\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The billionaire\u2019s ski club called the WEF brags about how many dams they have removed:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/xn--heres%20how%20https-oc6k\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2023\/08\/removing-dams-europe-river-restoration\/#:~:text=A%20record%20number%20of%20dams%20and%20weirs%20were%20removed%20from,of%20the%20continent's%20freshwater%20arteries\">The removal of dams in Europe is reviving rivers and boosting biodiversity<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"723\" height=\"525\" data-attachment-id=\"350975\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/climatescience.press\/?attachment_id=350975\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-310.png?fit=971%2C705&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"971,705\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"image\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-310.png?fit=723%2C525&amp;ssl=1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-310.png?resize=723%2C525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-350975\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-310.png?w=971&amp;ssl=1 971w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-310.png?resize=300%2C218&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-310.png?resize=768%2C558&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 723px) 100vw, 723px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The BBC was touting the environmental wonders of dam removal in Europe only 6 months ago:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They not only cause&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0048969721031259?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biodiversity loss<\/a>, impacting fish and microorganisms, but also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/371802926_Measures_to_Safeguard_and_Restore_River_Connectivity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prevent nutrients and sediments from flowing downstream<\/a>, hindering fisheries and the livelihoods that depend on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research now shows that at least&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-020-3005-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1.2 million instream obstacles block river flows in 36 European countries<\/a>, with about 68% less than 2m (6.6ft) in height. \u201cEven barriers as small as 20cm (8in) may impact or delay the movement of some organisms,\u201d says Carlos Garcia de Leaniz professor in Aquatic Biosciences at Swansea University and coordinator of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/amber.international\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amber<\/a>, a project that created the first atlas of European river barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some dams are sacred though \u2014 no bureaucrat is going to get rid of a hydro-dam. They stop floods by reducing human CO2 emissions which may in a thousand years, slightly reduce world temperatures in such a way as to change jet-streams, and maybe possibly, lessen the intensity of downfalls. Screw the fish eh?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acknowledging that dams have a detrimental effect on ecosystems doesn\u2019t mean denying hydropower\u2019s benefits in supplying energy, however. \u201cAbsolutely nobody is proposing to blow up or remove barriers which are in use,\u201d clarifies Garcia de Leaniz\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But as Matt Ridley notes, the Cheste dam was&nbsp;<em>\u201cwas specifically designed to prevent flooding, to \u2018regulate the flows coming from the upper basin of the Poyo and Pozalet ravines\u2019.<\/em>\u201d It was abandoned in 2004.&nbsp;<em>\u201cCould it have saved Valencia?<\/em>\u201d he wonders, pointing out that&nbsp;<em>\u201cthe city of Aragon was saved last month by a dam built by the emperor Augustus.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the tragedy of the Spanish flood, an ancient Roman dam saves the city of Aragon\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Built nearly 2,000 years ago by Emperor Augustus, the 34-meter dam prevented destruction and loss in the region<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the tallest surviving Roman dam in the world!&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Xqz8IPtzYd\">pic.twitter.com\/Xqz8IPtzYd<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 Mambo Italiano (@mamboitaliano__)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mamboitaliano__\/status\/1853233419456577793?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 4, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than 219 people have drowned and another 80 are still missing after the devastating floods in Valencia, Spain.
