The increase in Antarctic SIA occurred largely between 2000 and 2014.\u201d \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tc.copernicus.org\/articles\/18\/2141\/2024\/tc-18-2141-2024.pdf\">Bonan et al., 2024<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists attribute the long-term (1979-2022) expanding Antarctic sea ice trend, as well as the abrupt decline in sea ice extent from 2016 to 2019, to natural factors such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>a) decadal variability<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>b) internal climate variability<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>c) intrinsic variability of the Southern Annular Mode (SAM)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>d) El Ni\u00f1o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>e) Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>f) ocean preconditioning<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>g) weakened circumpolar westerlies<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>h) zonal atmospheric wave structures<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>i) surface wind variability<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>j) Pacific decadal variability<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>k) Atlantic multi-decadal variability<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The authors acknowledge that a \u201cunified understanding of how each process manifests spatially and temporally in the observational record is lacking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, anthropogenic CO2 emissions are not considered as a contributing factor in 45 years of Antarctic sea ice expansion or decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
