A local authority\u2019s decision to postpone its net zero targets have been slammed as “concerning” by climate campaigners and critics.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) has revised its deadline to become carbon neutral from 2025 to 2030 for the council, and 2030 to 2045 for the district as a whole.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authority said it had “led by example” when it came to cutting carbon emissions.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But critics said the authority was “not dealing with the climate emergency” and “breaking promises”.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conservative councillor Ian Snowdon said: “They\u2019ve known for a very long time that they\u2019re missing these targets \u2013 there\u2019s many officer reports stating that they\u2019re nowhere near and yet they leave it to just a few days before the date to suddenly put the targets back five and 15 years.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It seems the only time they ever take the climate emergency seriously is at election times.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authority highlighted the slowing of technological development in the carbon emission sector as a reason for the delay to the “highly ambitious targets”.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Council leader David Rouane said: “We set targets which were really challenging back in 2019 in order to change behaviour.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have led by example \u2013 we\u2019ve cut our emissions as a council quite significantly.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It\u2019s about the district as a whole \u2013 we\u2019re one business in the district and we\u2019re doing our bit, but what matters is what happens within the district as a whole.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Sue Roberts, who drew up the original targets while she was the council\u2019s climate lead, said it was the postponement of the district wide target that was “most concerning”.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It\u2019s the people, it\u2019s the whole area that we need to get down to zero carbon,” the former green party councillor added.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authority stressed that the revised targets “better align” with other councils across Oxfordshire, and the UK as a whole.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So critics say the authority was “not dealing with the climate emergency” . What a joke! Do these critics, which basically means the BBC, honestly think a bit of virtue signalling by this district council will change the world\u2019s weather?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember that this net zero target was just for the council itself, not the whole of South Oxfordshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Councils up and down the country have set these silly targets. And one by one they will quickly realise that they are unachievable, when the electricity they use is still being supplied from fossil fuels, when the EVs they are buying use batteries made using coal power in China, and when their silly solar panels depend on diesel powered quarrying machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that is before we even get into the food in their canteens, clothes they wear, computers in their offices and all of the other trappings of a modern society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
