Despite massive subsidies and world forums,<\/strong><\/em>
green power still only represents one-fifth of global energy<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

North America,<\/strong> with its vast resources, may be in a position to save the economies of the west. But governments on both sides of the border seem more concerned with green virtue signaling<\/strong> than actually finding a workable approach to carbon emissions that does not undermine our economies and ability to defend ourselves.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

The prevailing\u00a0notion, both in Ottawa and D.C.,<\/strong>\u00a0is that our countries should\u00a0ignore our resources,<\/strong>\u00a0and how best to use them, in order to fulfill a messianic vision of\u00a0massive, rapid emissions reduction.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Canada\u2019s proposed carbon tax,<\/strong> pushed through media at government expense<\/a>, and zealously promoted by Mark Carney<\/a>, who thinks mass decarbonization, as epitomized by Europe, provides the road map to prosperity, despite the continent\u2019s consistent economic lethargy.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

This approach has also poisoned politics as\u00a0not all provinces are affected equally<\/strong>\u00a0by the initiative. The institution of the carbon tax and other measures by government and through the relentless pressure of green non-profits, to get a\u00a040 per cent emissions cut<\/a>\u00a0by 2030 may be the toast of investment bankers betting on cashing in on forced changes. But for taxpayers, the impact will vary by province.\u00a0Fossil fuels account for\u00a0five per cent<\/a>\u00a0of Canada\u2019s overall GDP but four times as much in Calgary, Newfoundland and Labrador.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

However, as much this appeals to academics and wealth
pearl-clutchers in cities, it translates into higher prices than normal.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the NDP\u2019s Jagmeet Singh suggested,<\/a> it places unfair \u201cburdens\u201d on the working class,<\/strong> one reason for his opposition to the tax. Worse still, the biggest green targets of what climatistas label as \u201cindustrial carbon\u201d could devastate those same NDP voters \u2014 blue collar workers in mining, like manufacturing, logistics and agriculture.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Canada does not need\u00a0another way to slow its economy.<\/strong>\u00a0One\u00a0recent estimate<\/a>\u00a0suggests that the proposed $170 a ton proposal would\u00a0slice 1.8 per cent from the country\u2019s already anemic GDP<\/strong>\u00a0and cost upwards of 185,000 net jobs. Even Liberals\u00a0admit<\/a>\u00a0something close to a 1 per cent decline. Some may see these draconian attempts to wipe out fossil fuels as the Lord\u2019s work, but on the ground level it seems closer to\u00a0class warfare.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Trudeau and his supports insist these policies are critical for saving the planet. Yet, attempts to follow such approaches elsewhere have not ended well. In Europe, most obviously Germany, as well as\u00a0California<\/a>,\u00a0the shift to \u201crenewable energy\u201d has led, as it usually does, to\u00a0high prices<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>that already are driving German industry off the continent. Although not nearly as well-endowed with energy as North America, the climate lobby in Europe makes sure to throttle anything, such as offshore oil in the UK \u2014 in pursuit of green puritanism.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s something\u00a0delusional<\/strong>\u00a0in many of these initiatives. A key mistake is the common green assertion that fossil fuels are\u00a0becoming obsolete<\/a>\u00a0and should be wiped out for the benefit of fitting a new economy. Yet, in the real world, despite billions in subsidies for \u201cgreen power,\u201d\u00a0fossil fuels still represent roughly\u00a0four fifths of global energy generation,<\/a>\u00a0just as it did twenty years ago.<\/strong>\u00a0This is\u00a0after expenditures of over one trillion were spent on solar and wind<\/strong>. The West has been reducing per capita emissions for years, but this is utterly subsumed by growth in developing countries, notably China, which not only buys huge amounts of natural gas but continues to open\u00a0new coal-fired plants<\/a>\u00a0at a rapid rate.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

North Americans be forewarned that in imposing burdens on themselves, but not competitors, green governments are essentially guaranteeing their own decline.<\/strong> Already in the EU, nearly a million industrial jobs<\/a> have been lost over the past few years, with investment shifting to countries like China and India, which freely use coal and fossil fuels to keep costs down.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Britain\u2019s path<\/a> may give the starkest preview<\/strong> of the future Biden and Trudeau have in mind for us. Since 1990 the manufacturing sector\u2019s share of GDP has dropped roughly 50 per cent along with several million jobs. This parallels a two thirds drop<\/a> in UK energy production, while consumption has fallen by only one third. Three decades ago, a net energy exporter, the UK now increasingly depends on imports<\/a> from the Middle East and other unstable regions.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

The winner here is clearly China,<\/strong>\u00a0a country that\u00a0emits more GHG<\/a>\u00a0than all developed countries put together. Ironically, carbon reduction policies fit brilliantly into its\u00a0strategy to use its coal and other fossil fuel energy to power their takeover of the \u201cgreen economy.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0China has placed itself in the catbird\u2019s seat on renewable energy, including utter domination of solar panels and electric vehicles. China already produces\u00a0twice as many<\/a>\u00a0EVs as the US and the EU combined, and seeks to leverage its total domination of the\u00a0solar-panel industry<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0its battery capacity is now roughly\u00a0four times ours<\/a>.\u00a0China also exercises effective control of the requisite\u00a0rare earth minerals<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0technologies<\/a>\u00a0used to process them.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

As the west\u2019s own overpriced EVs\u00a0sit on lots,<\/a>\u00a0China plays us for utter fools\u00a0as we undermine our own industrial economy.<\/strong>\u00a0The forced march to EV will be particularly\u00a0tough on the\u00a0125,000<\/a>\u00a0who work in Canada\u2019s car factories.\u00a0Manufacturing and mining<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0much of it energy-related, represent, along with real estate,\u00a0two of the country\u2019s largest industries.<\/strong>\u00a0Under the current circumstances, they are\u00a0heading for a spectacular fall<\/strong>. Overall, the EV industry in the U.S. uses\u00a030 per cent less domestic labor<\/a>\u00a0than traditional gasoline car manufacturing, and under current circumstances can only hope for some basic assembly work using Chinese components.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

These policies will affect every industry and consumer<\/strong>\u00a0as cars and things like heaters are all forced to electrify. Britain\u2019s shift to EVs is projected to\u00a0double the demand for electricity by 2040,<\/a>\u00a0and its government is already looking to\u00a0ban the use of home chargers during peak hours<\/a>. By 2050 in California, state consultants estimate total energy demand will skyrocket, by\u00a0some estimates<\/a>\u00a0rising 60 to 90 per cent. Not surprisingly, the state will face \u201cacute electricity shortages\u201d over the coming decade, according to one\u00a0recent analysis<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Rising demands for electricity for artificial intelligence seems likely to add to this burden.<\/strong> Microsoft alone is opening a new data centre globally every three days. These power-hungry operations are expected to grow from 4.5 per cent of energy demand to 10 per cent by 2035. Artificial intelligence and data center demand are leading to massive expansions in projected energy use around the world at a time of restricted supply. Google, renowned for its green virtue signaling, has boosted its own emissions by 50 per cent since 2019.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, the oligarchs will likely get their juice from sources like decommissioned nuclear energy,<\/strong> while the average family will take the economic hit<\/strong> in order to fulfill the agenda pushed by the likes of Steve Jobs\u2019 widow, Lauren, Michael Bloomberg, the Rockefellers, Jeff Bezos and venture capitalist John Doerr. These, and other oligarchic allies, are waging a sophisticated and well-financed media and institutional campaign to catastrophize the climate issue as a way to ban gas stoves, stop new LNG facilities, and crack down on plastics.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Finally, there is the issue of security,<\/strong> particularly relevant in an age of declining western power. The new green mandates, if adopted, presage yet another force to further reduce the industrial prowess of western countries, while driving more industries to China, India, and other countries<\/strong> who produce their goods with dirtier fuels and develop resources with less environmental care. At the same time, third world countries, for the most part, are not embracing \u201cnet zero,\u201d as it is totally infeasible for them and will likely resist western lectures<\/a> on climate policy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

All of this is occurring as a concert of\u00a0ugly energy producers \u2014 Russia, Iran, and Venezuela<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 press their advantage<\/strong>\u00a0on western countries. They stand to benefit from continued de-industrialization as one way to further weaken the military capacity of the west. Taking away North American liquified natural gas from Europe simply makes the continent more dependent on such malefactors as Qatar,\u00a0a primary backer<\/a>\u00a0of terrorists and their supporters, and may lead the west, hat in hand, to beg from even worse regimes, like Russia and Iran.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The good news<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 while\u00a0green virtue-signaling<\/strong>\u00a0may appeal to Trudeau, Biden, and Harris \u2014 these\u00a0policies could be impacted by political realities.<\/strong>\u00a0Worried about voters in industrial states like Michigan and Pennsylvania,\u00a0Harris<\/strong>, even as she\u00a0embraces environmental bromides<\/a>, has\u00a0backed away from EV mandates and\u00a0opposition to fracking,\u00a0albeit with dubious credibility.<\/strong>\u00a0Yet, perhaps she realizes, or those around her do, that these policies do not sell well compared to\u00a0promoting more affordable and reliable energy.<\/a>\u00a0Trudeau<\/strong>, if he wants to remain relevant,\u00a0may similarly need to flip the script<\/strong>\u00a0if he hopes to forestall an utter political defeat.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
