Humans&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/education.nationalgeographic.org\/resource\/development-agriculture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transitioned<\/a>&nbsp;from nomadic hunter-gatherer societies to more sustainable lifestyles with permanent settlements.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">North America was no different, with Canadian flora and fauna thriving in the newfound warmth.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0277379116300427\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studies<\/a>&nbsp;on the spatial and temporal pattern of climate change through the Holocene in Arctic Canada show the temperature profile to be quite complex, following changes at the global level.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/0031018278900366\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">much of northern<\/a>&nbsp;Canada&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S027737912030398X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">endured a scary Little Ice Age<\/a>&nbsp;in the 1500s,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/europes-little-ice-age-all-things-which-grew-above-the-ground-died-and-starved\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threatening<\/a>&nbsp;to submerge again the continent\u2019s vegetation&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0169555X9900104X\">under ice<\/a>. Thankfully, the Earth returned to warming naturally by the 1700s.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 20th century in particular saw considerable warming that has had profoundly positive impacts on Canada\u2019s landscape and agricultural potential.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This recent rise in temperature has pushed the boundaries of arable land northward, extending growing seasons and opening new possibilities for cultivation. Crops like corn that were once considered impossible to grow in many parts of Canada are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ipad.fas.usda.gov\/countrysummary\/images\/CA\/cropprod\/Canada_Corn.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">now thriving<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWarmer temperatures and longer frost-free seasons could increase productivity across the board, but especially in northern regions and southern and central Prairies,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.northbridgeinsurance.ca\/blog\/how-climate-change-affects-agriculture-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a>&nbsp;Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) of the Canadian government. Additionally, it ensures higher rates of survival for young animals while reducing the cost of energy and livestock feed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This climatic shift \u2014 combined with man-made increases in atmospheric CO2&nbsp;concentrations that boost plant photosynthesis and with advances in agricultural technology \u2014 has contributed to a doubling of the size of the average Canadian farm in the last 50 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Better Growing Conditions Allowed for Diverse Crops<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While traditional staples like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ipad.fas.usda.gov\/countrysummary\/Default.aspx?id=CA&amp;crop=Wheat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wheat<\/a>&nbsp;barley, and canola remain important, they\u2019re now joined by an impressive array of products like world-class apples, cherries and wine grapes in the Okanagan Valley and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gca.org\/ice-is-melting-on-fertile-canadian-land\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">melons<\/a>&nbsp;in Newfoundland.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Canada is now the world\u2019s largest producer and exporter of lentils \u2014 a niche crop made popular in agrarian Canada by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ourtimes.ca\/article\/south-asian-farmworkers-rising\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South Asian migrants<\/a>. Experimentation with new crops and techniques has been a driving force behind Canada\u2019s growing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/daily.sevenfifty.com\/meet-the-new-generation-of-canadian-winemakers-with-south-asian-roots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agricultural diversity<\/a>&nbsp;and productivity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest AAFC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/agriculture.canada.ca\/en\/sector\/crops\/reports-statistics\/canada-outlook-principal-field-crops-2024-09-25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>&nbsp;says, \u201cProduction of all principal field crops (in 2024-2025) is estimated to have increased 1.8% year-over-year, which would be 2.4% above the previous five-year average.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higher rates of crop production mean more efficient animal husbandry. Despite the disruption of exports due to the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease) between 2003 and 2015, the export value of Canadian beef and veal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/736177\/beef-and-veal-exports-value-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than tripled<\/a>&nbsp;between 2013 and 2022.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gross production value from agriculture is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/outlook\/io\/agriculture\/canada#revenue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expected to almost double<\/a>&nbsp;between 2018 and 2028. The annual growth of agricultural production value in the five years will be one of the highest.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.preventionweb.net\/news\/new-trajectory-climate-change-rapidly-impacting-canadian-agriculture#:~:text=%22Warmer%20temperatures%20and%20longer%20growing,increase%20productivity%2C%22%20said%20Li.&amp;text=While%20there%20are%20places%20in,and%20variability%20remain%20a%20threat.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">those who<\/a>&nbsp;subscribe to a fallacious apocalyptic vision of climate change acknowledge that \u201cCanadian regions that were previously limited by shorter growing seasons may find new opportunities for agriculture, such as double cropping or cultivating crops that were not viable before.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That human civilization has benefited immensely from warming of the last century and in earlier Holocene periods is undeniable. This reality is quite noticeable in Canada as areas once unsuited for farming are now some of the most productive in the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canadian farmers are thankful for the longer growing season and the greater abundance of atmospheric carbon dioxide that better feeds plants. So should the rest of us.
