Presenting a Master Class on deception and sensationalism, the MJS claimed, \u201cthe message sent by this year\u2019s hurricane season\u201d is \u201cclimate change is here, there are no havens, and it\u2019s deadly and expensive.\u201d If the MJS and author&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/staff\/7529876001\/caitlin-looby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Caitlin Looby<\/a>&nbsp;had bothered to do research, they\u2019d learn there&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climaterealism.com\/2024\/10\/right-cnn-there-is-no-such-thing-as-a-climate-haven-there-never-has-been\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>never was<\/em>&nbsp;any \u201cclimate havens\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe science is straightforward and incontestable,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/local\/2024\/10\/09\/hurricanes-helene-and-milton-should-worry-us-in-wisconsin-heres-why\/75556144007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the MJS claimed<\/a>. In this regard, the article is true. The science&nbsp;<strong><em>is<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;straightforward and incontestable that hurricane events like Milton are becoming less frequent and severe, that warmer temperatures are&nbsp;<strong><em>saving<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;lives, and that the MJS makes Pinocchio look like a legendary truth-teller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some facts regarding Hurricanes might help them,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tampa is undergoing its longest period in recorded history without a major hurricane strike. The last one\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/tbw\/hurricane1921\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">occurred in 1921<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Florida recently underwent a 10-year period\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/safety\/hurricane\/news\/florida-hurricane-drought-august2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">without a hurricane strike<\/a>\u00a0of any size (ending in 2016), which is by far the longest such period in recorded history.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From 2009 through 2017, the United States\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/weather\/2016\/07\/12\/us-hurricane-drought\/86990408\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">experienced fewer hurricane strikes<\/a>\u00a0than during any other time period in recorded history.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The United States recently underwent a record\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2017_Atlantic_hurricane_season#:~:text=Hurricane%20Harvey%20struck%20Texas%20and%20became%20the%20first%20major%20hurricane%20to%20make%20landfall%20in%20the%20United%20States%20since%20Wilma%20in%202005%2C%20ending%20the%2012%2Dyear%20U.S.%20Major%20Hurricane%20drought\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">12 years without a major hurricane strike of Category 3<\/a>\u00a0or higher (2005-2017).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Globally, satellite measurements show hurricane frequency has been in decline\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climatlas.com\/tropical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for the past 35 years<\/a>, continuing a trend that goes back\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osti.gov\/pages\/biblio\/1876856\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than 100 years<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe message\u201d of Hurricane Milton is that while global warming\/climate change is causing a remarkable decrease in hurricane activity, climate change isn\u2019t making&nbsp;<strong><em>all<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;hurricanes disappear. Taking advantage of the fact that a relatively few hurricanes still occur, charlatans like the MJS will peddle misinformation that climate change causes all hurricanes and makes them worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attempting to personalize its climate change alarmism to Wisconsinites, the MJS cited recent wildfires in Canada and the American West, claiming drifting smoke from the distant wildfires killed people in Wisconsin and that climate change caused those wildfires. There is no scientific evidence for this claim and it seems on its face, extremely unlikely that smoke from distant wildfires killed or even sickened anyone in Wisconsin. However, assuming for the sake of argument that people in Wisconsin die from wildfires that occur in far distant places, the science is straightforward and incontestable that wildfires are becoming&nbsp;<strong><em>less frequent and severe<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;as the planet modestly warms. In 1998 NASA satellites began precisely measuring the amount of lands burned by wildfires. According to NASA, the amount of land burned by wildfires&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/90493\/researchers-detect-a-global-drop-in-fires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declined by 24 percent since 1998<\/a>. Peer-reviewed studies show the trend has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/2013JG002532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declining for more than a century<\/a>. If wildfires burning thousands of miles away \u2013 or anywhere else \u2013 are truly killing Wisconsinites, we have climate change to thank for saving countless lives as wildfires become less frequent and severe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hillary Clinton made news this week by calling on Big Tech to censor and suppress online misinformation. Perhaps Big Tech will be inspired by this call to action and respond by censoring and suppressing the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Don\u2019t count on it.
