Several of these lakes are visible in the image as dark blue areas, including one in Morocco\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/go.nasa.gov\/3MHAOMH\">Iriqui National Park<\/a>&nbsp;(shown in detail within the inset circle).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s been 30 to 50 years since we\u2019ve had this much rain in such a short space of time,\u201d added Houssine Youabeb of Morocco\u2019s General Directorate of Meteorology. See&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/gallery\/2024\/10\/8\/a-rare-rain-in-the-sahara-desert\">more photos here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPreliminary satellite analysis shows accumulations of many tens to more than 200 millimeters of rainfall in the areas affected\u2014roughly equivalent to what the region receives in a year. The rainfall accumulation estimates are based on NASA\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gpm.nasa.gov\/data\/imerg\">IMERG<\/a>&nbsp;(Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for GPM) data,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/153320\/a-deluge-for-the-sahara\">NASA reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rains, of course, are welcome, making a harsh region a bit less harsh for those living there.
