For sure you\u2019ve seen the headlines declaring 2024 likely to be the Hottest year ever.\u00a0 If you\u2019re like me, your response is: That\u2019s not the way it\u2019s going down where I live.\u00a0 Fortunately there is a website that allows anyone to check their personal experience with the weather station data nearby.\u00a0 weatherspark.com provides data summaries for you to judge what\u2019s going on in weather history where you live.\u00a0 In my case a modern weather station is a few miles away\u00a0Summer 2024 Weather History at Montr\u00e9al\u2013Mirabel International Airport<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0The story about Summer 2024 is evident below in charts and graphs from this site.\u00a0 There\u2019s a map that allows you to find your locale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, consider above the norms for Summer <\/strong>from the period 1980 to 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, there\u2019s Summer<\/strong> 2024 compared<\/strong> to the normal observations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The graph shows Summer had some warm days, some cool days and overall was pretty normal.  But since climate is more than temperature, consider cloudiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wow!\u00a0 Most of the summer was cloudy, which in summer means blocking the warming sun from hitting the surface.\u00a0 \u00a0And with all those clouds, let\u2019s look at\u00a0precipitation<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, in the observations out of 92 summer days, there were 56 days when it rained, including 11 days of thunderstorms with heavy rainfall. Given what we know about the hydrology cycles, that means a lot of heat removed upward from the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the implications for Summer temperatures in my locale.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There you have it before your eyes. Mostly warm days for the
three summer months, with exactly eleven hot afternoons (>30\u00b0C).
Otherwise comfortable and cool, and no hot
afternoons in September.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summary:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claims of hottest this or that month or year are based on averages of averages of temperatures, which in principle is an intrinsic quality and distinctive to a locale.  The claim involves selecting some places and time periods where warming appears, while ignoring other places where it has been cooling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember:  They want you to panic.  Before doing so, check out what the data says in your neck of the woods.  For example, NOAA declared that \u201cJuly 2024 was the warmest ever recorded for the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
