Rome calls for review of \u2018absurd\u2019 EU target amid slowdown in electric car sales<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Italy has called for a review of the European Union\u2019s 2035\u00a0petrol car ban<\/a>\u00a0amid fears it risked triggering the industry\u2019s \u201ccollapse\u201d. The Telegraph<\/a> has the story.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ministers from Giorgia Meloni\u2019s government claimed the \u201cabsurd\u201d policy was ideologically driven and required change to reflect the realities of the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There has been growing unease across the Continent about a slowdown in demand for electric vehicles<\/a> (EVs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also concerns that Europe\u2019s car industry is falling increasingly behind manufacturers in China and the US, which have benefitted from a flood of government subsidies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, car giant Volkswagen warned it might close factories in Germany<\/a> for the first time owing to issues such as high energy prices. This has prompted calls in some quarters for a rethink of tough EU climate goals which build up to a ban on internal combustion engine cars by 2035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, the Italian energy minister, told Bloomberg: \u201cThe ban must be changed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adolfo Urso, the industry minister, added: \u201cIn an uncertain landscape, which is affecting the German automotive industry, clarity is needed to not let the European industry collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEurope needs a pragmatic vision, the ideological vision has failed. We need to acknowledge that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
