Yes, she is a climate alarmist and supports forced (governmental) energy transformation to inferior, anti-ecological energies. But she has presented some common-sense observations about the climate crusade and agenda that offer hope about a mid-course correction toward human and ecological betterment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider this recent article at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation which was brought to my attention on LinkedIn (via Ian McCoy<\/a>), \u201cClimate warrior Jane Goodall isn\u2019t sold on carbon taxes and electric vehicles<\/a>.\u201d (April 13, 2024). Quotations from the CBC article follow in two areas: a carbon dioxide (CO2) tax and electric vehicles (EVs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carbon Dioxide Tax<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

World-renowned primatologist and climate activist Jane Goodall says carbon pricing schemes like the one Canada has deployed aren\u2019t a silver bullet to solve the pressing threat of climate change\u2026. Goodall said the jury\u2019s out on whether levying a consumer price on emissions will meaningfully improve the climate picture over the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goodall, who just turned 90, said a carbon tax can seem punitive to consumers \u2014 making a measure to fight climate change seem like a costly chore. She said she also worries that the fight against climate change has been \u201cpoliticized \u2026 causing people just not to listen\u201d \u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe problem with a climate tax is that \u2026 it doesn\u2019t get to the root cause, which is fossil fuel emissions, emissions of methane from industrial farming,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, in that sense, it\u2019s not something I endorse.\u201d\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Electric Vehicles<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But she added she\u2019s worried about the current crop of electric vehicles, which largely rely on lithium batteries. She welcomes EVs as a concept but said she fears that the global scramble to mine lithium is ruining parts of the natural environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHuge areas are now being destroyed by mining for lithium,\u201d she said. \u201cIt scars the natural world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pointing to Serbia, where the prospect of lithium mining prompted anger from local activists<\/a>, Goodall said there\u2019s a risk that the rush to exploit the world\u2019s lithium supply will damage the \u201cpristine environment\u201d and spark a backlash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also said the lithium mining and refining process requires \u201clots of water,\u201d which is \u201ctough in places where there\u2019s not that much fresh water.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo me, that\u2019s one of the big problems of electric vehicles,\u201d Goodall said. \u201cApparently there are other ways of sourcing batteries other than lithium and that needs to be developed.\u201d\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
