The Democratic National Convention (DNC) published guidance that urges food vendors to serve plant-based options or \u201clower-emission\u201d meat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DNC\u2019s sustainability<\/a> guidance<\/a> for food vendors serving customers at the convention in Chicago suggests that they should \u201coffer low-emission menu choices,\u201d including plant-based options, and \u201cprioritize\u201d chicken where possible because of its lower carbon intensity. Environmental activists and institutions like the United Nations have consistently<\/a> asserted<\/a> that reforming agricultural practices and decreasing red meat consumption are key to bringing down emissions and fighting climate change. (RELATED: Wagyu Burgers, Asian-French Fusion And More: Here\u2019s What\u2019s On The Menu At The UN Climate Confab)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beef is considered to be by far the most carbon-intensive type of meat to produce, followed by lamb and farmed crustaceans, according<\/a> to The New York Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The guidance is not binding, though the DNC<\/a> has also created a survey<\/a> for vendors, hosts of ancillary events and other stakeholders to fill out with information about the steps they took to make their contributions to the convention more environmentally friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOffer low-emission menu choices, including plant-based and locally sourced options. If meat is offered, prioritize lower-emission meats such as chicken,\u201d the guidance states. Additionally, the DNC\u2019s suggestions for vendors also include that they \u201crequest ethically sourced\/fair-trade certified seafood, coffee, tea, and chocolate\u201d and \u201csource high-emission items like coffee through local, small business partnerships.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the food vendors listed on the DNC\u2019s registry<\/a> include restaurants that ostensibly serve meat, including \u201cBazaar Meat<\/a>\u201d and the \u201cChicago Chop House<\/a>.\u201d The DNC\u2019s guidance also urges vendors to use reusable or compostable utensils and encourages them to source goods from local suppliers, in part to keep emissions down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the DNC is recommending the purchase of \u201crenewable energy certificates<\/a>,\u201d or credits, to \u201cmeasure and mitigate the impact of the energy used to heat, cool, and power venues and hotels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DNC did not respond immediately to a request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
