Two polar bears killed a worker at a remote Arctic radar station in Canada\u2019s northern Nunavut territory, prompting an investigation into the rare fatal attack.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The employee, who has not been named, was working for Nasittuq Corporation \u2013 a logistics company which operates radar defence sites on behalf of the Canadian government.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other workers responded to the scene and killed one of the bears, the company said in a statement.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are about 17,000 polar bears living in the country \u2013 making up around two-thirds of the global population of the species, according to the Canadian government.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The species is in decline, and scientists attribute it to the loss of sea ice caused by global warming \u2013 leading to shrinking of their hunting and breeding grounds..<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polar bears are not in decline. From a population estimated at about 12,000 bears in the late 1960s, numbers have almost tripled, to just over 32,000 in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
