The <\/em>Drax<\/em><\/a> power station was responsible for four times more carbon emissions than the UK\u2019s last remaining coal-fired plant last year, despite taking more than \u00a30.5bn in clean-energy subsidies in 2023, according to a report.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The <\/em>North Yorkshire<\/em><\/a> power plant, which burns wood pellets imported from North America to generate electricity, was revealed as Britain\u2019s single largest carbon emitter in 2023 by a report from the climate thinktank Ember.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The figures show that <\/em>Drax<\/em><\/a>, which has received billions in subsidies since it began switching from coal to biomass in 2012, was responsible for 11.5m tonnes of CO2<\/sub> last year, or nearly 3% of the UK\u2019s total carbon emissions.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drax produced four times more carbon dioxide than the UK\u2019s last remaining coal-fired power station at Ratcliffe-on-Soar in Nottinghamshire, which is <\/em>due to close<\/em><\/a> in September. Drax also produced more emissions last year than the next four most polluting power plants in the UK combined, according to the report.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frankie Mayo, an analyst at Ember, said: \u201cBurning wood pellets can be as bad for the environment as coal; supporting biomass with subsidies is a costly mistake.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company has claimed almost \u00a37bn from British energy bills to support its biomass generation since 2012, even though burning wood pellets for power generation releases more emissions for each unit of electricity generated than burning gas or coal, according to Ember and many scientists. In 2023, the period covered by the Ember report, it received \u00a3539m.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Ed Miliband relies on Ember for his entire energy strategy, I wonder what action he will take?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Government\u2019s response is telling:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A government spokesperson said the report \u201cfundamentally misrepresents\u201d how biomass emissions are measured.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clearly they could not give a toss whether Drax is increasing emissions or not. All they are worried about is that those emissions are not included in our carbon budget!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
