This Antarctic warmth and enhanced biological activity \u2013 which is also evident during the Mid-Holocene (7000 to 2,500 years ago) \u2013 coincided with what has come to be known as the \u201cgreening of Antarctica.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consequent to these warmer periods, crustaceans like fairy shrimp were able to swim in Antarctic lakes. Their numbers have historically been reduced or eliminated only during cooling periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today there are no&nbsp;<em>Branchinecta<\/em><em>&nbsp;gaini<\/em>&nbsp;occupying Monolithic Lake. It is permanent ice year-round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"723\" height=\"768\"
