Months after student strikes for climate action, some teachers still find the topic \u2018too controversial\u2019 to tackle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education researchers say some Australian teachers still feel climate change is a \u201ccontroversial\u201d and difficult topic to teach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The researchers urge an emphasis on practical ways to address climate change issues, to avoid triggering \u201ceco-anxiety\u201d in students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Updates to the national curriculum in 2022 put a greater emphasis on teaching climate change in schools, but Dr White says it\u2019s limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re seeing a little bit of an increase for the opportunity to explore climate change education through this curriculum, mostly in the areas of science and geography in Year 10,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnfortunately, a lot of our students across Australia don\u2019t take science or geography in year 10. So there\u2019s a bit of a challenge there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teachers met with backlash for teaching climate change<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Climate change also features in some state and territory curriculums, but Dr White says many teachers aren\u2019t resourced, or are reluctant, to include it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey\u2019re managing all sorts of family attitudes. And that plays out in a classroom in really strong ways,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While researchers claim they\u2019re advising teachers to take a \u201cpractical\u201d approach, there is evidence the climate curriculum in Australia is doing immense harm to children\u2019s mental wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine what it is like for parents, when the kids come home from mandatory climate education and tell parents \u201ctoday we learned we\u2019re all going to die \u2013 and it\u2019s your fault!\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No wonder teachers are receiving pressure to ease up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And for teachers who refuse to ease up, I wonder how many kids in their classes are being coached by their parents about how to lie to their teacher? I\u2019ve spoken to parents who told me they have embraced this tactic \u2013 telling kids the climate crisis is fake, then coaching kids to lie to their teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teaching kids to lie to their teacher at a young age is a terrible thing, but it is better than watching kids develop mental health problems because they believe the world is about to end, or because they are being constantly bullied by their climate zealot teacher for \u201cfailing\u201d to rote learn all the leftist green doomsday cult trash they are being taught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
