John Fetter\u00adman has in\u00addi\u00adcated that en\u00adergy would not be in the fore\u00adfront of Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnians\u2019 vot\u00ading de\u00adci\u00adsions this year, but he may not be ac\u00adcount\u00ading for its re\u00adla\u00adtion to in\u00adfla\u00adtion. In\u00adfla\u00adtion ranks as cru\u00adcially im\u00adpor\u00adtant, a top con\u00adcern of the vot\u00ading pub\u00adlic in the 2024 elec\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the en\u00adergy is\u00adsue had a mar\u00adginal ef\u00adfect in Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia\u2019s 2020 elec\u00adtion cy\u00adcle, its con\u00adnec\u00adtion to higher prices could be de\u00adci\u00adsive in 2024. In the spring, a Com\u00admon\u00adwealth Foun\u00adda\u00adtion sur\u00advey of 800 Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia reg\u00adis\u00adtered vot\u00aders found that more than two-thirds named in\u00adfla\u00adtion as an im\u00adped\u00adi\u00adment to main\u00adtain\u00ading their stan\u00addard of liv\u00ading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The costly Green New Deal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mean\u00adwhile, by pri\u00ador\u00adi\u00adtiz\u00ading a \u201ccli\u00admate emer\u00adgency,\u201d the Biden ad\u00admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion has ren\u00addered en\u00adergy pro\u00adduc\u00adtion more dif\u00adfi\u00adcult and cost\u00adlier and has in\u00adjected 400 bil\u00adlion of Green New Deal dol\u00adlars into the econ\u00adomy. Both are in\u00adfla\u00adtion\u00adary, as seen at the gas pump and in the prices of gro\u00adcer\u00adies and man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtured goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In any event, the is\u00adsue isn\u2019t go\u00ading away, be\u00adcause the Re\u00adpub\u00adli\u00adcans will raise it. Don\u00adald Trump will high\u00adlight the link be\u00adtween en\u00adergy pol\u00adicy and in\u00adfla\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like\u00adwise, Re\u00adpub\u00adli\u00adcan Senate can\u00addi\u00addate Dave McCormick is at\u00adtack\u00ading Sen. Bob Ca\u00adsey\u2019s ac\u00adqui\u00ades\u00adcence to Biden en\u00adergy pol\u00adi\u00adcies. Ca\u00adsey did make a po\u00adlit\u00adi\u00adcally ex\u00adpe\u00addi\u00adent elec\u00adtion year ex\u00adcep\u00adtion in ob\u00adject\u00ading to a Biden ban on ex\u00adports of liq\u00adue\u00adfied nat\u00adu\u00adral gas, which was since over\u00adturned by a court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The McCormick cam\u00adpaign re\u00adfers to sup\u00adpressed gas pro\u00adduc\u00adtion in Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia as a re\u00adsult of fed\u00aderal pol\u00adicy im\u00adped\u00ading pipe\u00adline con\u00adstruc\u00adtion, say\u00ading that \u201cun\u00adder Biden\u2019s en\u00adergy pol\u00adi\u00adcies, rub\u00adber-stamped by Bob Ca\u00adsey, we ha\u00adven\u2019t been able to ac\u00adcess clean nat\u00adu\u00adral gas. \u2026 Ca\u00adsey sup\u00adports pol\u00adi\u00adcies that are costing us jobs and driv\u00ading up en\u00adergy prices even more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Com\u00adpound\u00ading the Biden ef\u00adfect in the Key\u00adstone State are the \u201cgreen\u201d lean\u00adings of Josh Sha\u00adpiro, the Dem\u00ado\u00adcrat gov\u00ader\u00adnor. His pro\u00adpos\u00adals for a $499 mil\u00adlion car\u00adbon tax and an ex\u00adpan\u00adsion of ex\u00adpen\u00adsive wind and so\u00adlar en\u00adergy would add to the al\u00adready con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adable bur\u00addens of fam\u00adi\u00adlies and busi\u00adnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sha\u00adpiro of\u00adfers \u201cnot just di\u00adsas\u00adtrous en\u00adergy pol\u00adicy\u201d but \u201cex\u00adpen\u00adsively di\u00adsas\u00adtrous en\u00adergy pol\u00adicy,\u201d says David Tay\u00adlor, CEO of the Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia Man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders\u2019 As\u00adso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion, which lob\u00adbies on be\u00adhalf of 550,000 work\u00aders in the fifth larg\u00adest man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The loss of en\u00adergy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a state where coal\u2019s share of elec\u00adtric gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion has dropped to less than 20% from more than 50%, both state and fed\u00aderal pol\u00adi\u00adcies have been blamed for the clo\u00adsure of many coal-fired plants. Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia\u2019s larg\u00adest such gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtor at Homer City closed a year ago, and two more have an\u00adnounced early re\u00adtire\u00adments within a few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nat\u00adu\u00adral gas now pro\u00adduces more than half of Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia\u2019s elec\u00adtric\u00adity, but gas gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion, too, has suf\u00adfered un\u00adder gov\u00adern\u00adment reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion and with he threat of more to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 10 years prior to 2019, when a car\u00adbon tax first was pro\u00adposed, $14 bil\u00adlion worth of gas-fired plants were built in the state, re\u00adported Shawn Stef\u00adfee, a Boil\u00ader\u00admak\u00aders union busi\u00adness agent. How\u00adever, none have been built since and two $1 bil\u00adlion pro\u00adpos\u00adals were can\u00adceled. \u201cIt is highly un\u00adlikely that we will build an\u00adother,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether it\u2019s gas plants not be\u00ading built or coal plants be\u00ading closed, re\u00adli\u00adabil\u00adity of the power grid and em\u00adploy\u00adment take a hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Govern\u00adment and in\u00addus\u00adtry over\u00adseers of the high-volt\u00adage trans\u00admis\u00adsion sys\u00adtem have warned of en\u00adergy short\u00adages re\u00adsult\u00ading from ill-timed clo\u00adsures of fos\u00adsil fuel plants that in\u00adcrease the share of less re\u00adli\u00adable wind and so\u00adlar. A sig\u00adnifi\u00adcant re\u00adgional black\u00adout is not out of the ques\u00adtion and would dim the elec\u00adtoral out\u00adlook of pol\u00adi\u00adti\u00adcians sup\u00adport\u00ading green en\u00adergy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for the ef\u00adfect of job losses, one need only to read a Wash\u00ading\u00adton Ex\u00adam\u00adiner ac\u00adcount of fed\u00aderal of\u00adfi\u00adcials meet\u00ading with Homer City cit\u00adi\u00adzens af\u00adfected by last year\u2019s plant clos\u00ading: \u201cThe vast di\u00advide be\u00adtween the gov\u00adern\u00adment\u2019s un\u00adder\u00adstand\u00ading of the needs of the peo\u00adple they serve and the peo\u00adple them\u00adselves was never more ex\u00adcru\u00adci\u00adat\u00adingly ap\u00adpar\u00adent than at the meet\u00ading,\u201d the ar\u00adti\u00adcle be\u00adgan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rest of the story told of un\u00adkept prom\u00adises to fur\u00adloughed work\u00aders whose lives were \u201cup\u00adrooted for\u00adever.\u201d The meet\u00ading in\u00adcluded a slide show ex\u00adtol\u00adling the good in\u00adten\u00adtions of fed\u00aderal agen\u00adcies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The stakes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case for re\u00addi\u00adrecting fed\u00aderal pol\u00adicy away from the green agenda and to\u00adward more tra\u00addi\u00adtional en\u00adergy pro\u00adduc\u00adtion will be made by Trump, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly in en\u00adergy states like Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia, which would be one of the ul\u00adti\u00admate prizes in No\u00advem\u00adber. McCormick will fol\u00adlow suit, add\u00ading to the force of Trump\u2019s cam\u00adpaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At stake are the House, Senate and Pres\u00adi\u00addency, and the de\u00adcid\u00ading votes, at the mar\u00adgin, could very well come from Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia en\u00adergy con\u00adsum\u00aders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Don Ritter is a former Republican congressman from Pennsylvania\u2019s Lehigh Valley, and later led the National Environmental Policy Institute.
