Excerpt: So if you\u2019re making a 2024 movie about a tornado outbreak the likes of which have never been seen before<\/em>, there\u2019s a rather convenient raison d\u2019etre sitting right there. Simply have Daisy Edgar-Jones frantically look at some Doppler radar and mutter an actual study statistic like: \u201cThe Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society projected a 6.6 percent nationwide<\/a> increase in the frequency of supercell thunderstorms by the end of the century because of global warming \u2014 but nothing like this!<\/em>\u201d and suddenly your summer tornado popcorn movie has a bit of \u201cbut seriously tho, this could<\/em> really happen<\/em>\u201d semi-scientific heft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But to hear director Lee Isaac Chung tell it, even such a throwaway reference would be like beating red state moviegoers over the head with a DVD copy of An Inconvenient Truth<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI just wanted to make sure that with the movie, we don\u2019t ever feel like it is putting forward any message,\u201d Chung told CNN<\/a>. \u201cI just don\u2019t feel like films are meant to be message-oriented.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a scene where a local farmer played by Maura Tierney says that storms and floods are becoming more frequent, but she doesn\u2019t mention climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think what we are doing is showing the reality of what\u2019s happening on the ground \u2026 we don\u2019t shy away from saying that things are changing,\u201d Chung added. \u201cI wanted to make sure that we are never creating a feeling that we\u2019re preaching a message, because that\u2019s certainly not what I think cinema should be about. I think it should be a reflection of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
