The other is a remote-controlled gadget with rotating blades.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In the skies above Rockaway Beach in Queens, bird and drone are not, it seems, coexisting in harmony.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Just as New Yorkers flock to the beach to escape the sweltering summer heat, American Oystercatchers have taken to attacking a fleet of drones deployed by city officials to scan for sharks and swimmers in distress.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The aerial conflict between animal and machine is raising concerns about the safety of the shorebirds, as they aggressively pursue the buzzing drones in defense of their nests, city officials and bird experts said.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/13\/nyregion\/nyc-beaches-drones-angry-birds.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NY Times<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/new-york-drones-shorebirds-beach-safety-c2cbfb6ca03f771082ff57a28701f915\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AP confirms the aerial battles<\/a>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201dA fleet of drones patrolling New York City\u2019s beaches for signs of sharks and struggling swimmers is drawing backlash from an aggressive group of seaside residents: local shorebirds.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Since the drones began flying in May, flocks of birds have repeatedly swarmed the devices, forcing the police department and other city agencies to adjust their flight plans. The shorebird, known for its striking orange bill, lays its eggs this time of year in the sand on Rockaway Beach. While its population has improved in recent decades,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/species-spotlight-american-oystercatcher.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">federal authorities<\/a>&nbsp;consider the species a \u201chigh conservation concern.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/new-york-drones-shorebirds-beach-safety-c2cbfb6ca03f771082ff57a28701f915\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AP<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The federal authority considering oystercatchers of \u201chigh conservation concern\u201d is the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/species-spotlight-american-oystercatcher.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Park Service<\/a>, based on the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/partner\/us-shorebird-conservation-plan\">U.S. Shorebird Conservat<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/partner\/us-shorebird-conservation-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">i<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/partner\/us-shorebird-conservation-plan\">on Plan<\/a><\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sign in the photo above says \u201cEndangered Birds\u201d but oystercatchers are not pictured on it:&nbsp; oystercatchers may choose stupid nesting sites, but they are not Endangered, they are not Threatened, they are not even Near Threatened, even if the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/partner\/us-shorebird-conservation-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Fish &amp; Wildlife Service<\/a>&nbsp;is concerned. &nbsp;&nbsp;They are,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/species\/22693644\/93416407\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the IUCN Red List<\/a>&nbsp;<strong>Least Concern<\/strong>.&nbsp; The more protective&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/American_Oystercatcher\/lifehistory#conservation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Partners in Flight<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>lists the American Oystercatcher on their Yellow Watch List based on Restricted Breed Range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All the hullabaloo is based on the fears of bird conservation groups and city\/state conservation officials:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201c\u2026Katrina Toal, deputy director of the wildlife unit at the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. \u201cThe danger is to the birds, of course. They could strike the drone, injuring themselves.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thankfully<em>\u2026.\u201dNo birds have been harmed, but officials say there have been several close calls.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apparently, none of the fabulously expensive life-saving drones carrying life rafts to be dropped to people drowning and live video cameras watching for sharks so that lifeguards can to alert swimmers and get them out of the water have \u201cbeen harmed\u201d either.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s the latest news from&nbsp; \u266b\u266c&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=s0cLMW181mo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rockaway Beach\u2026.<\/a>\u266c\u266b.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong># # # # #<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Author\u2019s Comment:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news stories are interesting in regards to drones capable of carrying life rafts that can be dropped to struggling swimmers and live video that can alerts lifeguards to the presence of sharks in the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The worries about \u201cWhat if a bird harms itself?\u201d are, in my never-humble opinion, just plain silly.&nbsp;&nbsp; The drone operators have already moved their drone-ports (launch and landing sites) away from known nesting sites, almost entirely eliminating the possible conflicts.&nbsp; Still, birds will be birds, and birds&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wQtblvl4Z1o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will mob any threats flying near their nests<\/a>&nbsp;[3 minute YouTube].&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I recently witnessed small birds mobbing a snake in my yard.
