The ex-president is ranting about low water pressure and attacking mundane rules and technologies \u2013 and Republicans in Congress are now following his lead<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Donald Trump<\/a> embarked upon a lengthy complaint at a recent rally about how long it takes to wash his \u201cbeautiful luxuriant hair\u201d due to his shower\u2019s low water pressure, he highlighted the expanding assault he and Republicans are launching against even the most obscure environmental policies \u2013 a push that\u2019s starting to influence voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his bid to return to the White House, Trump has branded Joe Biden\u2019s attempt to advance electric cars in the US \u201clunacy\u201d, claiming such vehicles do not work in the cold and that their supporters should \u201crot in hell\u201d. He\u2019s called offshore wind turbines \u201chorrible\u201d, falsely linking<\/a> them to the death of whales, while promising to scrap incentives<\/a> for both wind and electric cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the former US president and convicted felon, who has openly solicited donations<\/a> from oil and gas executives in order to follow industry-friendly priorities if re-elected, has also spearheaded a much broader attack on a range of mundane rules and technologies that enable water and energy efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a June rally in Philadelphia, Trump claimed<\/a> Americans are suffering from \u201cno water in your faucets\u201d when attempting to wash their hands or hair. \u201cYou turn on the water and it goes drip, drip,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can\u2019t get [the soap] off your hand. So you keep it running for about 10 times longer.\u201d Trump complained it takes 45 minutes to wash his \u201cbeautiful luxuriant hair\u201d and that dishwashers don\u2019t work because \u201cthey don\u2019t want you to have any water\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Republicans in Congress are now following Trump\u2019s lead, introducing a flurry of recent bills<\/a> in the House of Representatives targeting energy efficiency standards for home appliances. The bills \u2013 with names such as the \u201cLiberty in Laundry Act\u201d, \u201cRefrigerator Freedom Act\u201d and the \u2018Clothes Dryers Reliability Act\u2019 \u2013 follow a conservative furore<\/a> over a confected, baseless<\/a> claim the Biden administration was banning gas stoves, which prompted further GOP legislation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new poll, released<\/a> by the Pew Research Center on Thursday, underscored this trend \u2013 support for new solar farms has slumped to 78% across all Americans, down from 90% just four years ago. Backing for expanding wind power has dropped by a similar amount, while interest in buying an electric vehicle is significantly lower than a year ago, with just 29% of people saying they would consider an EV, down from 38% in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
