War and disease are also factors, as the world saw recently after Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, and the swine fever that swept through China\u2019s pig population.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>But another, more sustained thread has run through many sharp increases in food prices. From&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/31400087-5749-4cbe-94ee-5ad87b1bb9aa\"><em>oranges<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;in Brazil to&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c847251c-0940-46b3-899c-5e38e720d484\"><em>cocoa<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;in west Africa;&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9b284294-1c76-46a0-9fe7-97ea94542c68\"><em>olives in southern Europe<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ba65e510-941e-4cdc-ba60-52b4b4c8d0a0\"><em>coffee<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;in Vietnam, permanently shifting weather patterns as a result of climate change are reducing crop yields, squeezing supplies and driving up prices.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Adam Davis, co-founder of global agricultural hedge fund Farrer Capital, says climate change has helped drive up prices for a long list of food commodities trading at higher levels this year. \u201cWheat is up 17 per cent, palm oil 23 per cent . . . sugar 9 per cent and pork 21 per cent,\u201d he says. For the consumer, the \u201clag effect of those high commodity prices is not going away\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>A third of the food price increases in the UK in 2023 was down to climate change, according to the&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/eciu.net\/media\/press-releases\/2023\/families-hit-by-605-food-bill-as-extreme-weather-and-energy-crisis-bites\"><em>Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;think-tank.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThere\u2019s a material impact from climate change on global food prices,\u201d says Frederic Neumann, chief Asia economist at HSBC. \u201cIt\u2019s easy to shrug off individual events as being isolated, but we\u2019ve just seen such a sequence of abnormal events and disruptions that, of course, add up to climate change impact.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Such repeated events result in \u201ca permanent impact on the ability to supply food,\u201d argues Neumann.
