(I will expand on this later on.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further, encouraged by the Climate Propaganda Cabals, news outlets rely on a report from world newspaper-of-record like The Guardian [a co-founder of the climate propaganda outlet&nbsp;<em>Covering Climate Now<\/em>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<em>CCNow<\/em>]:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Extreme temperatures kill 5 million people a year with heat-related deaths rising, study finds&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/jul\/08\/extreme-temperatures-kill-5-million-people-a-year-with-heat-related-deaths-rising-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Selectively quoting from that piece is common practice, despite the fact that there is a sub-headline that reads:&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong><em>\u201cMore people died of cold than heat in past 20 years but climate change is shifting the balance.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>One has to read the piece very carefully to find that it reports&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanplh\/article\/PIIS2542-5196(21)00081-4\/fulltext?mc_cid=1345b6879c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on Zhao et al. 2021<\/a>, which did, in fact, find that heat related deaths were rising (as population also rises) and to discover that the gentle warming of the climate is preventing more cold deaths than the increase in heat deaths \u2014&nbsp; resulting in a&nbsp;<em>net reduction in extreme temperature deaths.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More exactly:&nbsp; &nbsp;<strong>9.43% of all deaths<\/strong>&nbsp;were related to non-optimum temperatures. &nbsp;Of the same 5 million, 8.52% were cold-related and 0.91%&nbsp; were heat-related. &nbsp;Again, over 8.5 percent of deaths are cold-related and only 0.9 were heat related \u2014 that is almost 10 times as many cold-related deaths than heat related deaths.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oh, and the shift in death?&nbsp; That increase in heat-deaths?&nbsp; Here I quoted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanplh\/article\/PIIS2542-5196(21)00081-4\/fulltext?mc_cid=1345b6879c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the paper\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>Findings<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cFrom 2000\u201303 to 2016\u201319, the global cold-related excess death ratio [defined as \u201cthe ratio between<\/em>&nbsp;<em>annual excess deaths and all deaths of a year\u201d \u2013 kh] changed by \u20130\u00b751 percentage points (95% eCI \u20130\u00b761 to \u20130\u00b742) and the global heat-related excess death ratio increased by 0\u00b721 percentage points (0\u00b713\u20130\u00b731), leading to a net reduction in the overall ratio.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[Aside:&nbsp; There seems to be some statistical chicanery involved in reporting \u201cexcess death ratio\u201d in place of something simpler like \u201cchange in deaths per million\u201d or \u201clives saved by warmer temperatures\u201d.&nbsp; What I read in this study of deaths from \u201cnon-optimal ambient temperatures\u201d (the subject of this study),&nbsp; we have a comparison between half a percentage point improvement in a large number of deaths (~471,000 cold deaths) being compared to two-tenths of a percentage points worsening of a much smaller number of deaths (~45,000 heat deaths).&nbsp; I could well be mistaken, there maybe some Public Health reason for doing this, &nbsp;so, some smart guy or gal could sort this out for the readers in comments?]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This lying about heat and cold deaths is subject to a pretty good debunking by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/joshuacohen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joshua Cohen<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;at Forbes, in his July 2023 piece&nbsp;<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/joshuacohen\/2023\/07\/19\/excessive-summer-heat-can-kill-but-extreme-cold-causes-more-fatalities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Excessive Heat Can Kill, But Extreme Cold Still Causes Many More Fatalities<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[quoting below from that Forbes piece \u2013 note the author is writing about Zhao et al. 2021]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cBetween 2000 and 2019, annual deaths from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/jul\/08\/extreme-temperatures-kill-5-million-people-a-year-with-heat-related-deaths-rising-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heat exposure increased globally<\/a>. The 20-year period coincided with the earth warmed by about 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat-related fatalities disproportionately impacted Asia, Africa and Southern parts of Europe and North America.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cInterestingly, during the 2000-2019 period examined in the study, while heat-related deaths rose, deaths from cold exposure fell. And they decreased by a larger amount than the increase in heat-related fatalities. Overall, researchers estimated that approximately 650,000 fewer people worldwide died from temperature exposure during the 2000-2019 period than in the 1980s and 1990s.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bluntly, in the recent twenty years studied, about 650,000 lives were saved by the slow and steady warming of the climate 2000-2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">~ ~ ~ ~ ~<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s head back to the first point:&nbsp; The NOAA and NWS (National Weather Service) graphic of \u201cWeather Fatalities\u201d.&nbsp; Here again, Forbes\u2019 Joshua Cohen tries to set the record straight:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cMoreover, the two U.S. government agencies that track heat and cold deaths\u2014National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\u2014are diametrically opposed in their estimates.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say what?&nbsp; Aren\u2019t facts, well\u2026.facts? &nbsp;How can two major U.S. Federal agencies that track weather fatalities and a wider range of deaths be \u201cdiametrically opposed\u201d in numerical estimates?&nbsp; I mean, dead people are pretty easy to count, they don\u2019t move around and try to hide, do they?&nbsp; (Note: But, it is tricky:&nbsp; see my&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2020\/11\/28\/cause-of-death-a-primer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cause of Death<\/a>&nbsp;and its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2020\/12\/18\/cause-of-death-follow-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Follow-up<\/a>.]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe NOAA\u2019s account of what it calls \u201cweather-related deaths\u201d suggests that during the 30-year period 1988 to 2017, an average of 134 heat-related deaths occurred annually, while 30 per year were cold-related.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cContrary to the NOAA, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wonder.cdc.gov\/mortSQL.html\">CDC\u2019s National Center for Health Statistics Compressed Mortality Database<\/a>, which is based on actual death certificates, indicates that&nbsp;<strong>roughly twice as many people die of cold in a given year than of heat.<\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[The link is to the CDC Database tool, it is incredibly complicated to use and it is difficult to extract the deaths by heat and cold. \u2013 However, Anna Skinner, at Newsweek, managed to dig out a figure. See Late Additions section below. \u2014 kh]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cohen offers a reasonable and possibly-right explanation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cIt wouldn\u2019t be the first time that organizations\u2019 estimates of what are seemingly the same observable events are so far apart. Discrepancies in definitions and assumptions around measurement underlie each organization\u2019s calculations of cold- and heat-related deaths.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAll things considered, it is very likely in a given year that cold causes more deaths than heat. As the planet heats up, the number of heat exposure deaths increase and fatalities due to cold decrease. The rate of decrease in deaths owing to cold is faster than the rate of increase in deaths due to heat. And so on balance there then appear to be fewer temperature exposure deaths.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/joshuacohen\/2023\/07\/19\/excessive-summer-heat-can-kill-but-extreme-cold-causes-more-fatalities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cohen\u2019s piece<\/a>, he wraps up hedging his bets so he can\u2019t be called a Climate Denier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then there is the European data on heat deaths vs. cold deaths, in another 2023 Lancet paper:&nbsp;<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2542519623000232\">Excess mortality attributed to heat and cold: a health impact assessment study in 854 cities in Europe<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>and its infamous graphic.&nbsp; On the left is&nbsp;<strong>as published<\/strong>, copied directly from the original paper, on the right, with the numerical axes equalized, courtesy of Bjorn Lomborg:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"448\" data-attachment-id=\"334822\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/climatescience.press\/?attachment_id=334822\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-585.png?fit=720%2C448&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"720,448\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"image-585\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-585.png?fit=720%2C448&amp;ssl=1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-585.png?resize=720%2C448&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-334822\" style=\"width:760px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-585.png?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-585.png?resize=300%2C187&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But like I often do, Cohen wrote too soon.&nbsp; He should have waited a year until Zhao et al. wrote their most recent (May 2024) paper, specifically on heat-wave deaths, &nbsp;on :&nbsp; \u201c<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1004364\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global, regional, and national burden of heatwave-related mortality from 1990 to 2019: A three-stage modelling study<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp; Their findings are summarized in this simple statement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cDuring 1990 to 2019 warm seasons, 153,078 deaths were associated with heatwaves (nearly half in Asia), which accounted for 0.94% of all deaths and equated 236 deaths per 10 million residents.&nbsp;<strong>The global heatwave-related excess death rate declined by 7.2% per decade in comparison to the 30-year average<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong># # # # #<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Late additions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judith Curry re-tweets (can\u2019t say re-Xs)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andrew_Revkin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andy Revkin<\/a>, who laments the demise of journalistic integrity of The Guardian headline and story featured in this essay \u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Revkin\/status\/1805074920763781311\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Revkin\/status\/1805067950006653198\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/california-water-temperatures-drop-dangerous-levels-1915779\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A story in Newsweek<\/a>&nbsp;reports that \u201cCalifornia Water Temperatures Drop to Dangerous Levels\u201d, 47.3 degrees Fahrenheit (8.5\u00b0C). Included in the piece is the statement:&nbsp;<em>\u201cNational Institutes of Health data revealed that 1,330 people in the U.S. die from cold exposure every year.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;And that\u2019s only direct cause of death\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong># # # # #<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Author\u2019s Comment:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know I didn\u2019t answer the question asked in the title: \u201c<em>Why Do They Lie about Extreme Temperature Deaths?<\/em>\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I don\u2019t answer because I don\u2019t know.&nbsp; There is overwhelming publicly available data and published in-depth peer-reviewed studies, published even in journals known for their pro-climate-alarmist bias, that establish that cold, low temperature, &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2016\/12\/20\/moderate-cold-kills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">even moderate cold<\/a>, kills far many more people than high temperature.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is true in the United States, in the United Kingdom, Europe and the world in general.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, rank propaganda is based on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologicalscience.org\/news\/how-liars-create-the-illusion-of-truth.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">simple process of repeating the same lie over and over and over until it is accepted as truth<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the links for use in defeating this lie:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanplh\/article\/PIIS2542-5196(21)00081-4\/fulltext?mc_cid=1345b6879c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zhao et al.
