claim.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Exporters in China and Malaysia are using virgin palm oil instead of recycled cooking fat to make&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/05\/18\/net-zero-jet-fuel-rules-to-add-6pc-to-transatlantic-fares\/\"><em>sustainable aviation fuel<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;(SAF), research from lobby group Transport &amp; Environment (T&amp;E) suggests.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This means that rather than reducing CO2 emissions, the drive to adopt SAF may instead be driving deforestation.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>SAF accounts for just 0.2pc of total jet fuel use, although the British Government has ordered UK airlines to lift that proportion to 10pc by the end of the decade.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Cooking oil forms the basis for 80pc of the world\u2019s SAF, making old chip fat a valuable commodity.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>However, unscrupulous suppliers are&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2023\/10\/31\/british-airways-green-aviation-fuel-raise-cash\/\"><em>seeking to turn a profit<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;by cutting out the kitchen altogether and shipping virgin palm oil to unwary refiners and airlines.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"723\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Malaysia is the worst offender, according to T&amp;E, as campaigners cast doubt over the country\u2019s claims that it exports three times more used cooking oil than it collects.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Last year Britain secured almost 30pc of its SAF from oil shipped from Malaysia.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Cian Delaney, the group\u2019s biofuels campaigner, said: \u201cWith Malaysia being one of the world\u2019s largest palm oil producers, it would heavily indicate that used cooking oil is simply a backdoor for palm. Fraud is almost certainly happening at a mass scale.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>China also appears to be engaged in cooking oil fraud, T&amp;E said.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>While figures on the collection and export of oil appear to match, China has a large market for \u201cgutter oil\u201d that is illegally resold for cooking.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Taking that into account, there are \u201cstrong suspicions\u201d that some exports include virgin vegetable oil mislabelled as waste oil.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>SAF production will need to be scaled up 100 times to help airlines reach the 2030 target, according to estimates from&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/06\/16\/virgin-atlantic-chief-jews-enduring-difficult-period\/\"><em>Virgin Atlantic<\/em><\/a><em>, providing a further spur for fraud.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Ryanair alone would need all of the used cooking oil in Europe to reach its target of making 12.5pc of flights sustainable within six years, T&amp;E said.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Activists also fear that the illicit trade of SAF will encourage the expansion of palm oil plantations, one of the biggest drivers of deforestation in the tropics, according to T&amp;E.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Some biofuels \u2013 such as rapeseed oil \u2013 are produced directly from crops, but mostly in temperate regions where they\u2019re substituted for cereals already being grown.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Europe burns through 130,000 barrels of used cooking oil a day, eight times more than it generates.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>China, with a population of 1.4bn people, is the primary supplier of used cooking oil, exporting more than half of its annual production.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/06\/18\/green-aviation-targets-cooking-oil-fraud-mass-scale\">https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/06\/18\/green-aviation-targets-cooking-oil-fraud-mass-scale<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
