The&nbsp;<em>Telegraph&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/06\/18\/green-aviation-targets-cooking-oil-fraud-mass-scale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has the story<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exporters in China and Malaysia are using virgin palm oil instead of recycled cooking fat to make&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/05\/18\/net-zero-jet-fuel-rules-to-add-6pc-to-transatlantic-fares\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sustainable aviation fuel<\/a>&nbsp;(SAF), research from lobby group Transport &amp; Environment (T&amp;E) suggests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means that rather than reducing CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;emissions, the drive to adopt SAF may instead be driving deforestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SAF accounts for just 0.2% of total jet fuel use, although the British Government has ordered U.K. airlines to lift that proportion to 10% by the end of the decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cooking oil forms the basis for 80% of the world\u2019s SAF, making old chip fat a valuable commodity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, unscrupulous suppliers are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2023\/10\/31\/british-airways-green-aviation-fuel-raise-cash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seeking to turn a profit<\/a>&nbsp;by cutting out the kitchen altogether and shipping virgin palm oil to unwary refiners and airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Malaysia is the worst offender, according to T&amp;E, as campaigners cast doubt over the country\u2019s claims that it exports three times more used cooking oil than it collects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year Britain secured almost 30% of its SAF from oil shipped from Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cian Delaney, the group\u2019s biofuels campaigner, said: \u201cWith Malaysia being one of the world\u2019s largest palm oil producers, it would heavily indicate that used cooking oil is simply a backdoor for palm.
