What happened exactly, why \u2013 and what might come next?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What\u2019s the story?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After suffering a crushing defeat at the hands of Marine Le Pen\u2019s far right National Rally (RN) in the European parliamentary elections, the French president on Sunday evening unexpectedly announced a snap general election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to usually accurate projections, Macron\u2019s centrist list, headed by MEP Val\u00e9rie Hayer, scored between 14.8% and 15.2% in the European poll, less than half the 32%-33% tally booked by RN, whose lead candidate was the party\u2019s president, Jordan Bardella, 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The president won re-election in 2022. Le Pen is no President Trump. But she has promised to cancel wind and solar subsidies and instead concentrate on nuclear power, and she has also indicates she wants to protect French manufacturing \u2013 she regards driving manufacturing offshore with harsh climate rules but still using the manufactured products, importing the products instead of manufacturing them in France, as \u201cclimate hypocrisy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following is from&nbsp;<strong>April 2022<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Climate discussed for 20 minutes in 3-hour-long Macron-Le Pen debate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/authors\/nelly-moussu\/\">Nelly Moussu<\/a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/content_providers\/euractiv-france\/\">Euractiv France<\/a>&nbsp;| translated by&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/translators\/daniel-eck\/\">Daniel Eck<\/a>&nbsp;21 Apr 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the three-hour-long debate between French presidential candidates Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen, climate was discussed for just 20 minutes, despite being one of the most anticipated topics.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.fr\/section\/plan-te\/news\/presidentielle-3h-de-debat-20-minutes-sur-lecologie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EURACTIV France reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate was one of the ten topics on the debate\u2019s agenda on Wednesday (20 April), ahead of the final round of voting on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Le Pen wants a slowed transition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Le Pen, French purchasing power is at the heart of her discourse on the environment. The far-right leader promises to lower VAT on fuel, gas and heating oil while exiting \u201cthe European electricity market\u201d to restore the purchasing power of the French.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While favouring the ecological transition, Le Pen wants \u201cit to be slower than what is being imposed on the French, to enable them to cope with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to her, the current government is asking too much of the French people, and she blamed Macron for his \u201cpunitive ecology\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le Pen also believes that \u201cwind power is an ecological and economic absurdity\u201d. But Macron will be even more of a lame duck President than he is already, his hands would be tied on many issues, it would be an enormous embarrassment for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What can we conclude from all this, with regards to the Paris Agreement?<\/strong>&nbsp;Le Pen has said she plans to uphold France\u2019s Paris commitments, but she also makes it clear the Paris Agreement is not her main priority. If greens play hardball, my crystal ball tells me Le Pen would choose economic sanity over damaging climate commitments.
