United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres called for governments to ban fossil fuel advertising during a Wednesday speech at the Museum of Natural History in New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guterres, who has served as Secretary-General of the UN since 2017, compared the fossil fuel industry to Big Tobacco and claimed a ban on advertising for fossil fuel companies is necessary to curb climate change and end corporate \u201cgreenwashing\u201d during his remarks<\/a>. Guterres also called for \u201cwindfall\u201d taxes on energy producers worldwide during his Wednesday comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe must directly confront those in the fossil fuel industry who have shown relentless zeal for obstructing progress,\u201d Guterres said. \u201cI urge every country to ban advertising from fossil fuel companies.\u201d (RELATED: Wagyu Burgers, Asian-French Fusion And More: Here\u2019s What\u2019s On The Menu At The UN Climate Confab)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFossil fuels are not only poisoning our planet \u2014 they\u2019re toxic for your brand,\u201d Guterres added. \u201cYour sector is full of creative minds who are already mobilizing around this cause. They are gravitating towards companies that are fighting for our planet \u2014 not trashing it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond concerns about climate change, Guterres\u2019s comments referenced \u201cgreenwashing,\u201d a term that describes instances when corporations embellish their work on climate or the environmental benefits of their products, services and operations, according<\/a> to the UN\u2019s definition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guterres has repeatedly railed against the fossil fuel industry in his capacity as the UN\u2019s top official, describing them as \u201cgodfathers of climate chaos\u201d during his Wednesday talk after overseeing the commitment<\/a> reached at December 2023\u2019s UN climate summit<\/a> to \u201ctransition away<\/a>\u201d from fossil fuel use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN did not respond immediately to a request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
