This is his modus operandi. Australia is arguably the Western leader of the current censorship push, with threats to impose&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.financeminister.gov.au\/media-release\/2024\/03\/27\/digital-id-bill-passes-senate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a digital ID on Aussie citizens<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2024\/04\/26\/australia-is-not-a-free-country-will-australians-need-tor-browser-to-bypass-the-great-australian-firewall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a push to develop a Chinese style firewall around all Australian internet access<\/a>. Former New Zealand Prime Minister&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacinda_Ardern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jacinda Ardern<\/a>&nbsp;appears to be a major player in the digital censorship push \u2013 in 2022 Ardern made a wild speech which apparently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2023\/04\/26\/former-new-zealand-pm-joins-global-censorship-push\/\">attempted to link uncensored climate skepticism to mass shooting atrocities<\/a>. Ardern currently has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hks.harvard.edu\/announcements\/jacinda-ardern-appointed-hks-fellowship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two concurrent fellowships at Harvard<\/a>&nbsp;related to online disinformation, which in my opinion implies significant US academic interest in restricting online freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My point is, it is funny to laugh at the serial frustrations of wannabe online censors, but watching them fail and complain is only funny so long as they keep failing to curtail our freedoms. Even the USA isn\u2019t immune from these attacks on freedom \u2013 in my opinion, the significant US academic participation in the online censorship push, as personified by Ardern\u2019s dual Harvard fellowships, is a warning of the scale of the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If online content is captured by vested interests to the extent I believe establishment media has been captured, the age of free speech will be at an end, regardless of constitutional guarantees of free speech.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2022\/04\/22\/president-obama-the-first-amendment-does-not-apply-to-facebook-and-twitter\/\">As President Obama said in 2022, \u201cThe first amendment does not apply to \u2026 facebook and twitter\u201d<\/a>. A voluntary cartel of internet service providers, engineered by putting the \u201cright\u201d people in charge of all these organisations, would be just as effective at curtailing our freedom as tearing up the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">First Amendment<\/a>, without the embarrassment of an obvious violation of the US Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2026 the online watchdog
