AI can catalyze innovation by translating R&amp;D into climate action.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generative AI\u2019s capabilities for natural language processing, data synthesis and down-scaling and product prototyping can deliver practical tools to climate leaders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world is making big bets on technology\u2019s role in the climate crisis. Across the globe, scientists and technologists are pushing for the next wave of breakthroughs in climate adaptation and mitigation. And there is reason for optimism: recent years have seen meaningful progress, from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-023-03552-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weather forecasting<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2023\/11\/4-breakthrough-actions-to-decarbonize-steelmaking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">industrial decarbonization<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AI and climate change<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The debut of Generative AI (GenAI) expanded the collective imagination of what AI can do. We already know that AI can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-021-03819-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drive scientific breakthroughs<\/a>but can it go further? Leaders should explore how AI can act as a downstream catalyst in the innovation cycle, driving adoption of the latest tools and awareness of the latest science. Here are three places to start:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Organizing unstructured Earth data and down-scaling models to local levels<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earth science has been seen as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/edinburghconservationscience.com\/2020\/05\/02\/making-messy-data-work-for-conservation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data messy<\/a>\u201d due to complex Earth systems and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/blog\/products\/data-analytics\/how-to-apply-machine-learning-to-unstructured-data-using-bigqueryml#:~:text=Unstructured%20data%2C%20which%20includes%20images%2C%20documents%2C%20and%20videos%2C%20will%20account%20for%20up%20to%2080%20percent%20of%20data%20by%202025.%20However%2C%20organizations%20currently%20use%20only%20a%20small%20percentage%20of%20this%20data%20to%20derive%20useful%20insights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unstructured environmental data<\/a>&nbsp;from observational methods. Recently, the volume of such data has exploded,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2023\/04\/earth-data-for-better-business-and-community-outcomes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with over 100 terabytes<\/a>&nbsp;of satellite imagery collected daily. Yet, this doesn\u2019t simplify the data\u2019s unstructured nature. AI is key to organizing and down-scaling this vast data for local applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Building a \u2018GPT\u2019 interface to translate climate models into simple language&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>GenAI could simplify this by providing a GPT-like interface enabling users of all backgrounds to interact with climate data relevant to their needs, such as monitoring local sea-level changes. This approach could make climate models more accessible and build trust in climate projections.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Accelerating the prototyping phase of technology development<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leaders must, therefore, step up to build ecosystems for AI and climate change.
