( 3d render )<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From <a href=\"https:\/\/judithcurry.com\/2024\/05\/26\/fact-checking-the-fact-checkers-on-my-prager-u-video\/\">Climate Etc. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Judith Curry<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last January, I visited Prager U in California.&nbsp; I recorded several videos.&nbsp; Science.feedback.org has done a fact check on my 5 minute video, which is the topic of this post<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is information about Prager U.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are links to my two videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prageru.com\/video\/good-news-the-world-is-not-ending\">The Good News About Climate Change&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prageru.com\/video\/judith-curry-climate-scientists-cant-intimidate-me\">Stories About Us: Climate Scientists Can\u2019t Intimidate Me<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>JC\u2019s Prager U text<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s start with the good news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All things considered, planet earth is doing fine.&nbsp; Humans are doing better than at any other time in history.&nbsp; Over the last hundred years, when temperatures have warmed by about two degrees Fahrenheit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Global population has\u00a0<em>in<\/em>creased by 6 billion people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Global poverty has substantially\u00a0<em>de<\/em>creased<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And the number of people killed from weather disasters has\u00a0<em>decreased<\/em>\u00a0by 97% on a per capita basis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are obviously not facing an existential crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone who tells you that we are, is not paying attention to the historical data.&nbsp; Instead, they are concerned about what \u201cmight\u201d happen in the future, based on predictions from inadequate climate models, driven by unrealistic assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I offer this positive diagnosis after a lifetime of study on the issue. Until recently, I was a professor of climate science and Chair of the&nbsp;School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it\u2019s not all good news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest problem with climate change is not climate change, per se, it\u2019s how we\u2019re&nbsp;<em>dealing&nbsp;<\/em>with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re attempting to control the uncontrollable, at&nbsp;<em>great<\/em>&nbsp;cost, by urgently eliminating fossil fuels. We\u2019ve failed to properly place the risks from climate change in context of&nbsp;<em>other&nbsp;<\/em>challenges the world is facing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate change has become a convenient scapegoat.&nbsp; As a result, we\u2019re neglecting the&nbsp;<em>real&nbsp;<\/em>causes of these&nbsp;problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are countless examples, but let me give you just one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lake Chad in Africa is shrinking. Nigeria\u2019s president Muhammadu Buhari blames it on you-know-what.&nbsp; \u201cClimate change,\u201d he pronounced, \u201cis largely responsible for the drying up of Lake Chad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it\u2019s not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, the initial water level decline was caused by long droughts in the 1970s and 1980s. But the lake has remained virtually empty over the past two decades, even while rainfall has recovered. During this time, rivers flowing into the lake from Cameroon, Chad, and Nigeria have been diverted by government agencies to irrigate inefficient rice farms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, climate change has little to do with the declining water level of Lake Chad. Rather, bad human decisions do. Climate Change is just a convenient excuse, hiding poor management and governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blaming every major weather disaster on man-made global warming defies common sense, as well as the historical data record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the past 50 years, the global climate has been fairly benign.&nbsp; In the US, the worst heat waves, droughts and hurricane landfalls&nbsp; occurred in the 1930s \u2013 much worse than anything we\u2019ve experienced so far in the 21<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Population growth, where and how people live, and how governments manage resources are much more likely to create conditions for a disaster than the climate itself. We\u2019ve always had hurricanes, droughts and floods, and we always will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe you think I\u2019m being too cavalier about the dangers we face. Isn\u2019t it true that 97% of scientists agree that humans are causing dangerous climate change?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, here\u2019s what all climate scientists actually agree on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The average global surface temperature has increased over the last 150 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Humans are adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And carbon dioxide emissions have a warming effect on the planet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, climate scientists&nbsp;<em>disagree<\/em>&nbsp;about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How\u00a0<em>much<\/em>\u00a0warming is associated with our emissions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether this warming is larger than\u00a0<em>natural\u00a0<\/em>climate variability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And how\u00a0<em>much\u00a0<\/em>the climate will change in the future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s a lot that we still don\u2019t understand about how the climate works.&nbsp; Ocean circulation patterns and variations in clouds have a large impact. But climate models do a poor job of predicting these.&nbsp; Variations in the sun and volcanic eruptions also have a substantial impact, but these are simply unpredictable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact is, we can\u2019t predict the future climate. It\u2019s simply not possible. And everybody should acknowledge that. And every scientist does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While humans do influence the climate, we can\u2019t&nbsp;<em>control<\/em>&nbsp;the climate. To think we can is the height of hubris, the Greek word for overconfidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What we can do is adapt to whatever mother nature throws our way. Human beings have a long history of being very good at that. There is no evidence that solar variations or volcanic activity are substantial drivers of recent climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their objections are focused on two of my statements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHowever, climate scientists&nbsp;<em>disagree<\/em>&nbsp;about . . . &nbsp;whether this warming is larger than&nbsp;<em>natural&nbsp;<\/em>climate variability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut climate models do a poor job of predicting these.&nbsp; Variations in the sun and volcanic eruptions also have a substantial impact, but these are simply unpredictable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I could cite hundreds of papers published in refereed science journals that question whether the recent warming is larger than natural climate variability (many of these papers have been discussed on this blog).&nbsp; The IPCC chooses to ignore these papers.&nbsp; This does not mean that disagreement among scientists does not exist.&nbsp; In fact, the IPCC AR4 and AR5 conclusions about attribution are framed in terms of \u201c<em>most&nbsp;<\/em>of the warming\u201d and \u201c<em>more than half&nbsp;<\/em>of the global average surface temperature increase\u201d.&nbsp; So &gt;50%.&nbsp; Imagining 49% is not farfetched.&nbsp; The IPCC AR4 talks about \u201cunresolved internal variability\u201d to justify using the relatively weak \u201cmost\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With regards to the potential impact of future volcanic eruptions, the IPCC AR6 WG1 has this to say (Cross-Chapter Box 4.1):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA low likelihood high impact outcome would be several large eruptions that&nbsp;<strong>would greatly alter the 21st century climate trajectory<\/strong>&nbsp;compared to SSP-based ESM projections.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plenty to disagree about on these topics (they didn\u2019t mention natural internal variability, which IMO is the biggest deal).&nbsp; But that is the point of my statement: SCIENTISTS DISAGREE (for details, see Chapter 8 of my book Climate Uncertainty and Risk).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>JC comments<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact checkers ignore the main points of my statement, and focus on trying to emphasize the consensus that natural climate variability doesn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the fact checkers essentially&nbsp;<strong>ignored<\/strong>&nbsp;the rest of my statement, presumably they have no objections to these statements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll things considered, planet earth is doing fine.&nbsp; Humans are doing better than at any other time in history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are obviously not facing an existential crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe biggest problem with climate change is not climate change, per se, it\u2019s how we\u2019re&nbsp;<em>dealing&nbsp;<\/em>with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re attempting to control the uncontrollable, at&nbsp;<em>great<\/em>&nbsp;cost, by urgently eliminating fossil fuels.
