So,\u00a0Greta Thunberg<\/a>\u00a0has a new cause.<\/strong>\u00a0She\u2019s found a new crusade to throw her weight behind. Forget saving the planet \u2013\u00a0now she wants to save Palestine.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, the pint-sized prophetess of doom has swapped\u00a0raging against industrialism for raging against Israel.<\/strong>\u00a0Mother Nature will just have to wait \u2013 her erstwhile valiant defender is busy fixing the Middle East now.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, Greta was snapped\u00a0at the\u00a0protest in Malmo<\/a><\/strong>, Sweden\u00a0against Israel\u2019s inclusion in the Eurovision Song Contest.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She looked the part. She had\u00a0a keffiyeh draped over her shoulders and a smug look on her face:<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0two must-haves<\/strong>\u00a0of every puffed-up bourgeois activist who gets off on fuming against Israel.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The keffiyeh really has become the\u00a0uniform of the self-righteous.<\/strong>\u00a0Go into a hip coffee shop or overpriced Soho burger joint and I guarantee you\u2019ll see a Gen Z\u2019er decked out in the Palestinian scarf.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever happened to\u00a0the sin of \u201ccultural appropriation\u201d?<\/strong>\u00a0Not long ago, the right-on raged against white dudes who wear their hair in dreadlocks and white women who don kominos. \u201cStop stealing other people\u2019s culture!\u201d, they\u2019d yell. Yet\u00a0now they themselves spend their days in Arab attire.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That image of Greta in Malmo, looking very satisfied with herself, summed up the role the keffiyeh plays in the life of the 21st-century activist.\u00a0Keffiyeh-wearing is less about drawing attention to the plight of the Palestinians than drawing attention to\u00a0you.<\/strong>\u00a0Look at me in my Arab garb, aren\u2019t I good and hyper socially aware \u2013 that\u2019s\u00a0the needy cry of these hipster appropriators.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet beneath their radical chic, darker sentiments lurk.<\/strong>\u00a0Their boilerplate hatred for Israel can have horrible consequences. So while young Greta was signalling her virtue on the streets of Malmo, another young woman was\u00a0holed up in her hotel room for fear of mob assault<\/strong>.\u00a0 It\u00a0was Eden Golan<\/strong>, the Israeli-Russian 20-year-old who sang for Israel in the\u00a0Eurovision finals in Malmo<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Golan\u2019s inclusion in Eurovision sickened the anti-Israel protesters. Israel, they said, must be given the boot over its\u00a0\u201cgenocide in Gaza\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 their\u00a0juvenile and historically illiterate term for Israel\u2019s war against Hamas.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A mob even swarmed around the hote<\/strong>l Ms Golan was staying in. She received death threats. Things were so bad that she was warned not to leave her room. She was given a 24-hour security detail.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is this really\u00a0\u201cprogressive activism\u201d? It looks more like bullying to me.<\/strong>\u00a0The bullying of a young woman by a baying mob of Israel-bashers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How\u00a0galling that Greta should have been in the thick of such a regressive protest.<\/strong>\u00a0This is someone who has spoken out about her own experiences of bullying. Who has said that women in the public eye get too much flak.\u00a0 Yet now\u00a0she preens at a protest<\/strong>\u00a0that has had the consequence, intentional or otherwise, of\u00a0filling a young woman with such dread<\/strong>\u00a0that she has essentially become a prisoner in her own hotel.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We might call this\u00a0woke privilege.<\/strong>\u00a0Because Greta subscribes to\u00a0chattering-class correct-think on every issue<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 climate change, transgenderism, Israel \u2013 she is granted the freedom to go about her business as she sees fit.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Golan, on the other hand, is denied such basic liberty.<\/strong>\u00a0Her national heritage, her devotion to her homeland, marks her out as morally suspect. And thus she must hide. \u201cShame!\u201d, protesters shouted, as if she were a modern-day witch deserving of a dunking.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is\u00a0tempting to see<\/strong>\u00a0Greta\u2019s conversion from the climate-change cult to the anti-Israel religion as\u00a0just bandwagon-jumping.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Perhaps her saviour complex,\u00a0her burning sense of virtue, just needs a new outlet.<\/strong>\u00a0So, like others of her generation, she ditches climate and trans and all the rest and moves on to \u201cPalestine solidarity\u201d. That\u2019s the issue on which you can really make moral waves these days.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

But I think there\u2019s\u00a0something else going on<\/strong>, too. The truth is that climate activism and anti-Israel agitation are very comfy bedfellows. There are even some\u00a0creepy commonalities between green agitation and Israel\u2019s greatest ideological foe: radical Islam.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hence we can even have a situation where\u00a0Muslim activists who yell \u201cAllahu Akbar\u201d can be\u00a0elected as councillors<\/a>\u00a0for the Green Party.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upper-middle class recycling obsessive in Hampstead might seem a million miles from the bearded radical who publicly sings the praises of Allah \u2013 but they\u00a0share an instinctive revulsion for capitalist society.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

One sees it as a crime against Mother Nature,
the other as an affront to Muhammad.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To both sides, Israel is the pinnacle of the modernity they hate.<\/strong> A young, confident, entrepreneurial nation that rendered the desert a land of plenty?<\/strong> Boo. Hiss. Cast its people from our social circles.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it makes sense that Greta has temporarily ditched Gaia for Gaza.<\/strong> For this crisis, too, furnishes her with an opportunity to advertise her pious rejection of the modern world.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

Both, at root, represent a disgust with modernity. Both the privileged
Western weepers over industrial society and the Islamist haters
of Israel share an aversion to the modern world,
to progress, to Enlightenment itself.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em>1<\/a><\/sup>2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n
