Pope Francis told CBS News this week that climate change deniers are \u201cstupid\u201d to refute compelling evidence of a climate emergency. [emphasis, links added]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome people are stupid (necios), and stupid even if you show them research<\/a>, they don\u2019t believe it,\u201d<\/strong> the pontiff told<\/a> CBS Evening News anchor Norah O\u2019Donnell when asked what he would say to the deniers of climate change.  \u201cWhy? Because they don\u2019t understand the situation, or because of their interests, but climate change exists,\u201d the 87-year-old pope asserted.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope Francis had never before sat down for an extensive interview, one-on-one, with a U.S. television network during his 11-year pontificate.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope Francis has been a\u00a0vocal enthusiast<\/a>\u00a0for the war on climate change<\/strong>,\u00a0calling<\/a>\u00a0global warming \u201cone of the most serious and worrying phenomena of our time\u201d and\u00a0urging<\/a>\u00a0\u201cdrastic measures\u201d to combat climate change.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

He has expressed<\/a> his opinion that any skepticism regarding an alleged \u201cclimate emergency\u201d<\/a> is \u201cperverse.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pope has also singled out the United States<\/a> as particularly to blame for the \u201cclimate emergency,\u201d<\/strong> even though it is one of the countries with the cleanest<\/a> air in the world.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf we consider that emissions per individual in the United States are about two times greater than those of individuals living in China and about seven times greater than the average of the poorest countries, we can state that a broad change in the irresponsible lifestyle connected with the Western model would have a significant long-term impact<\/strong>,\u201d he stated last October.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Among the \u201cfools\u201d denounced by the pope for their \u201cperverse\u201d skepticism of the climate crisis<\/a> are a group of over 1,600 prominent scientists<\/strong>, including two Nobel Prize winners, who issued the \u201cWorld Climate Declaration<\/a>\u201d last August, refuting the existence<\/a> of a so-called \u201cclimate emergency.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among other things, the Declaration asserted<\/a> that climate models have proven inadequate<\/a> for predicting global warming<\/a>, that carbon dioxide (CO2) is not a pollutant<\/a><\/strong>, and that climate change has not increased natural disasters<\/a><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world has warmed \u201csignificantly less than predicted by IPCC<\/a>\u00a0on the basis of modeled anthropogenic forcing,\u201d the text states, and\u00a0the gap between the\u00a0real world<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0modeled world<\/a>\u00a0\u201ctells us that we are far from understanding climate change.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is no statistical evidence<\/a> that global warming is intensifying hurricanes<\/a>, floods<\/a>, droughts<\/a>, and such like natural disasters<\/a>, or making them more frequent<\/a>,<\/strong>\u201d the document declared. \u201cHowever, there is ample evidence that CO2-mitigation measures<\/a> are as damaging as they are costly.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is no climate emergency<\/a>,\u201d it concluded. \u201cTherefore, there is no cause for panic and alarm<\/a>.<\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe strongly oppose the <\/strong>harmful and unrealistic net-zero CO2 policy<\/strong> proposed for 2050<\/a>. Go for adaptation instead of mitigation;<\/strong> adaptation works whatever the causes are,\u201d it added.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n
