It is a summation of issues we\u2019ve talked about on this site for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEarth\u2019s issuing a distress call,\u201d said United Nations secretary-general Ant\u00f3nio Guterres on March 19. \u201cThe latest State of the Global Climate report shows a planet on the brink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFossil fuel pollution is sending climate chaos off the charts. Sirens are blaring across all major indicators: Last year saw record heat, record sea levels, and record ocean surface temperatures. \u2026 Some records aren\u2019t just chart-topping, they\u2019re chart-busting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Joe Biden called the climate \u201can existential threat\u201d in his 2023 State of the Union address. \u201cLet\u2019s face reality. The climate crisis doesn\u2019t care if you\u2019re in a red or a blue state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his 2024 address he said, \u201cI don\u2019t think any of you think there\u2019s no longer a climate crisis. At least, I hope you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When recalling past temperatures to make comparisons to the present, and, more importantly, inform future climate policy, officials such as Mr. Guterres and President Biden rely in part on temperature readings from the United States Historical Climatology Network (USHCN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/article\/hidden-behind-climate-policies-data-from-nonexistent-temperature-stations-5622782?welcomeuser=1\">https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/article\/hidden-behind-climate-policies-data-from-nonexistent-temperature-stations-5622782?welcomeuser=1<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem, say experts, is that an increasing number of USHCN\u2019s stations don\u2019t exist anymore.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"308\" data-attachment-id=\"317878\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/climatescience.press\/?attachment_id=317878\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/image-197.png?fit=720%2C308&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"720,308\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"image-197\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/image-197.png?fit=720%2C308&amp;ssl=1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/image-197.png?resize=720%2C308&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-317878\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/image-197.png?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/image-197.png?resize=300%2C128&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shewchuk goes on to describe the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNOAA fabricates temperature data for more than 30 percent of the 1,218 USHCN reporting stations that no longer exist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He calls them \u201cghost\u201d stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Shewchuck said USHCN stations reached a maximum of 1,218 stations in 1957, but after 1990 the number of active stations began declining due to aging equipment and personnel retirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NOAA still records data from these ghost stations by taking the temperature readings from surrounding stations, and recording their average for the ghost station, followed by an \u201cE,\u201d for estimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The addition of the ghost station data means NOAA\u2019s \u201cmonthly and yearly reports are not representative of reality,\u201d said Anthony Watts, a meteorologist and senior fellow for environment and climate at the Heartland Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf this kind of process were used in a court of law, then the evidence would be thrown out as being polluted.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Shewchuk said the USHCN data is the only long-term historical temperature data the United States has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn these days of apparent \u2018climate crisis,\u2019 you would think that maintaining actual temperature reporting stations would be a top priority\u2014but they instead manufacture data for hundreds of non-existent stations. This is a bizarre way of monitoring a climate claimed to be an existential threat,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emphasis mine in the following quotes from the article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor various reasons, NOAA feels the need to alter this data instead of fixing equipment problems they think exist,\u201d Mr. Shewchuk said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFixing temperature reporting stations is not rocket science. If we can go up to space to fix the Hubble telescope, we can surely come down to earth to fix a few thermometers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NOAA\u2019s use of ghost temperature stations isn\u2019t a recent phenomenon.&nbsp;<strong>In 2014, Mr. Watts raised the issue of ghost stations and bad data with NOAA\u2019s chief scientist at the National Climatic Data Center, Tom Peterson, and Texas\u2019 state climatologist, John Nielsen-Gammon, who confirmed there was an issue.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnthony \u2013 I just did a check of all Texas USHCN stations. Thirteen had estimates in place of apparently good data,\u201d Mr. Nielsen-Gammon&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2014\/06\/28\/the-scientific-method-is-at-work-on-the-ushcn-temperature-data-set\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;in an email to Mr. Watts, according to a report on the latter\u2019s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a bug, a big one. And as Zeke [Hausfather] did a cursory analysis Thursday night, he discovered it was systemic to the entire record, and up to 10 percent of stations have \u2018estimated\u2019 data spanning over a century.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time,&nbsp;<strong>Mr. Watts reported on his climate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>, \u201cWatts Up With That,\u201d that NOAA was taking the issue seriously and expected them to issue a fix shortly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That fix never materialized. \u201cThey\u2019re still doing it, and it\u2019s even worse\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthony is quoted further in the article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NOAA\u2019s Cooperative Observer Program, which includes the USHCN stations, is a network of daily weather observations taken by more than 8,500 volunteers, its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/products\/land-based-station\/cooperative-observer-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">webpage<\/a>&nbsp;states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Watts said the process for volunteers is \u201clabor intensive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(L\u2013R) Philippe Papin, hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center, and Richard Pasch, senior hurricane specialist, work on tracking unsettled weather over the eastern Gulf of Mexico in Miami on May 31, 2023. (Joe Raedle\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt requires people to record high and low temperature, rainfall, the temperature at the time of observation, and do it at a very specific time, every day. And this has to then be recorded and sent to the National Climatic Data Center in Nashville, now known as the National Center for Environmental Information,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome of it\u2019s still done on paper, some of it\u2019s still done with touchtone over the telephone. It requires a lot of dedication and effort on the part of the observer. It\u2019s a thankless job. And as a result, observers have been disappearing. A lot of them have left due to attrition by death. And then there\u2019s no one to take on that job.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" subtracting the unmanned station from the overall number of USHCN stations, NOAA creates a number from surrounding stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAs a result, we end up with this milkshake of data that is basically a hot mess, and isn\u2019t real in most cases,\u201d Mr. Watts said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And further down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bigger Issue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Mr. Watts, ghost stations are problematic but are only part of a much bigger problem.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He explained that several different entities\u2014such as the European Commission\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/climate-indicators\/temperature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Copernicus<\/a>, NASA\u2019s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (<a href=\"https:\/\/data.giss.nasa.gov\/gistemp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GISS<\/a>), Berkeley\u2019s Earth Surface Temperatures (<a href=\"https:\/\/climatedataguide.ucar.edu\/climate-data\/global-surface-temperatures-best-berkeley-earth-surface-temperatures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BEST<\/a>), and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/monitoring\/monthly-report\/global\/202313\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NOAA<\/a>\u2014publish monthly and yearly climate data and advertise themselves as having \u201cindependent data.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat is a lie,\u201d Mr. Watts said about the independent data claim.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe USHCN data set and the [new] nClimDiv climate division data set [which uses the same stations and has the same problems] comes from the Cooperative Observer [Program] in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSimilarly, in the rest of the world, there is a Cooperative Observer [Program] that suffers from the same problems of attrition and incompetence. And it\u2019s called the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/products\/land-based-station\/global-historical-climatology-network-daily\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GHCN<\/a>; the Global Historical Climatology Network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll these different entities out there, like NOAA, GISS, BEST, all the entities I listed, use the same data from GHCN. And they all apply their own set of \u2019special sauce\u2019 adjustments to create what they believe is true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cIt\u2019s almost like each of these entities is creating their version of the real, true God. You know, it\u2019s like a religion. They\u2019re using different mathematical and statistical techniques to produce their version of climate reality.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd it all goes back to the same original, badly-sited, badly-maintained ghost station dataset around the world. USHCN and GHCN are the same stuff.<strong>\u00a0So, there is no independent temperature dataset.
