href=\"https:\/\/jennifermarohasy.com\/author\/jennifer\/\">jennifer<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The corals in the central region of the Great Barrier Reef have suffered through this last summer with some bleaching and also damage from cyclone Kirrily.&nbsp;&nbsp; There are seasons under the sea, just as there are on land \u2013 and in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though large areas of reef crest are denuded of coral \u2013 colonies of clown fish have hung-on including at Lynch reef.\u00a0\u00a0 These little fishes, they still come out to say \u2018Gidday\u2019, at least to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"723\" height=\"484\" experience earlier this week when I had the privilege of diving five reefs off Townsville \u2013 Chicken, Wheeler, Davies, Lynch, and also John Brewer Reef.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These reefs are part of the central region of the Great Barrier Reef. \u00a0I was diving with Paul Crocombe the owner of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adrenalinsnorkeldive.rezdy.com\/\">Adrenalin Snorkel and Dive<\/a>, and also Stuart Ireland the owner of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.calypsoproductions.com.au\/\">Calypso Productions<\/a>. \u00a0 There is a combined 60 years of experience, much of it under the water at the Great Barrier Reef.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img bleaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We did find one reef, Wheeler reef, that was essentially intact, with an extraordinary diversity of fish, corals, and very little bleaching.&nbsp;&nbsp; We will feature this reef in an IPA-sponsored short documentary about this adventure, soon. (You can find previous efforts online,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ipa.org.au\/greatbarrierreef\">click here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, yes, it is the case that you can always find somewhere that is flourishing, even if overall conditions have not been so good.\u00a0 In this little clip (<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/931277722\">click here<\/a>, and following), that I\u2019ve just now uploaded to Vimeo you can see Paul with the fishes at Wheeler reef on Wednesday 3rd April 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wheeler Reef - Paul Crocombe &amp; Fishes\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/931277722?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"723\" height=\"407\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a lot of people get to dive at Chicken Reef because it is so far offshore, on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef; quite a way east of Wheeler.&nbsp; (Not quite as far as Myrmidon, that I visited in October 2021 and blogged about back then, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jennifermarohasy.com\/2020\/12\/gardens-of-old-porites-without-sharks\/\">click here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stuart put the drone up at Chicken and got some impressive aerials. But with the choppy conditions it was impossible to make much out in terms of the condition of the corals from above the water, from a drone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image camera.&nbsp; Our lookout Robert, from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/adrenalinsnorkeldive.rezdy.com\/\">Adrenalin Snorkel and Dive,<\/a>&nbsp;saw a whale shark go straight over the top of Paul and Stuart at Chicken reef without them noticing. They were looking down, not up!
